Hey guys,

I’ve got this quirky little problem with my display?

Basically I’ve got a 6600GT and my SM226 (1680*1050) is currently the only configured monitor, but the thing is my browsers, Firefox and IE don’t appear to fit the screen when maximised? Their scroll-bars (right-side) seem to go off screen

Plus, I’ve noticed that if I try and move the mouse cursor far left it stops at the edge of the screen, however, on the right side it disappears off the screen and I can drag windows over, out of view. I thought it may have been because it was remembering my old monitor, but it is definitely now set as the only monitor in the nVidia control panel :(

Any ideas?

Cheers,

SW.

sounds like the display isn't centred properly. check the driver options or there might even be a button on your monitor (my packard bell monitor does) to auto correct it. :)

Are you using the screen via VGA or DVI? If you're using it via VGA use the monitors auto-adjust to centre the screen.

I'm using it with a DVI cable atm and I've installed the digital driver from the CD...

With DVI the 'Auto Correct' button doesn't work :(

Just a thought; but it couldn't be down to my cable could it?

I'm currently using a DVI-D cable I bought on the Bay.

I didn't think to try out the supplied one that has since been bundled up in the loft! Maybe that should be my next line of action...

It's really starting to annoy me now - I swear its changing all the time! One minute I can see the cursors tail on the right of the screen and the next minute I seem to be able to move it off screen? Another telling indication is that I can see daylight at the right-hand side of the white open-cross at the top right of the screen (I'm going to get some pictures up as soon as it does it again, so i can prove it to you all :p ).

Hmm, just noticed something interesting... When I turn the monitor off, you can catch a glimpse of the display correcting itself before you lose sight of the picture? WTF!

What’s going on?

SW.

EDIT: Here's my proof!

Normal.

See how the cursor stops at the right hand side of the screen...

And this is when it's playing up...

Note how the open white cross and scroll bar have been moved over :(

It is easily remedied by switching the monitor off and turning it back on again, but I don't really want to have to keep doing that!

Clarkey said:
i'd say that monitor is screwed then.

That's not what I wanted to hear...

You’re probably right tho! It's twitching back and forth now and again on its own :(

I thought I was seeing things, but my mate has just confirmed it with me?

I think I might still try the cable.

Could try another DVI cable if you can get hold of one, or even try through VGA. It didn't come with a DVI cable then? That's pretty rare these days.

Hey guys,

After trying different cabling/systems etc, the problem remained so I got on to Samsung for the second time to confirm the problem must be with the panel.

Anyway, just been down to see the ‘experts on the industrial estate’ with my faulty monitor…

This is after Samsung support have twice told me to get it down there.

After spending nearly 45 mins waiting for their technical experts to identify the fault, the salesman told me they couldn’t find a problem? I then asked to show them the fault myself, which I did straight away

The senior engineer, if that’s what you’d call him, told me that the problem was simple and that he just needed to make an adjustment on the remote… “Where’s your remote?” he enquired. “Remote?” I said. “Yes, don’t tell me you haven’t bought the remote with you?” I think I must have smiled, looking slightly bemused, but I told him, “this is a monitor, it doesn’t have a remote?” The salesman, also present laughed, and then confirmed this for him – unbelievable!

I had to leave suddenly because of work, but they weren’t finished anyway, they had to ring Samsung up to confirm my customer reference number that I’d been given because the fault was in their words, ‘so minor.’

I suspect they were also trying to ‘fix’ the monitor because as I was leave they were fiddling around with the manual positioning of the screen? They told me that have ‘Auto’ enabled was I also the cause of the problem and that it should be turned off. They were doing all this with an analogue cable even after I’d already said that I was using DVI – although the problem persists in both mediums. They were also using a 1280*1024 resolution, even after I told them that I always used the native resolution of 1680*1050!

Can I just confirm a couple of other things while I’m having rant?

I must have owed and configured about 10 TFT’s in my time, and not once have I ever had to turn the ‘Auto’ configuration settings off? I thought that was the beauty of TFT technology, you no longer had to spend ages moving the screen around yourself? You just plugged in the power and interface cable and away you went; colour settings etc were a personal preference.

But as for them telling me to set the screen up myself – that’s just wrong isn’t it?

And as for turning the Auto configuration off, I’ve never had to do that in the past, even more so with DVI :)

Any thoughts from you guys, before I head back down there?

Cheers,

SW.

Its worrying that the person you saw still has a job being that clueless.
If it was me I would ask politely to speak with someone above his ahead when you go back if he continues to waste time about it.
Its hardly a minor fault imo. That would annoy the hell out of me.
What you said about dvi is spot on, he's just talking yet more nonsense and wasting everyones time.

Keep your cool once you get there but don't leave the place till they ring up samsung and get a rma confirmed for you from your house so you can use the monitor in the meantime and you don't ever have to deal with them again.

I don't think auto-adjust has any relevance when using a digital input, ie it's always off and there's no way to turn it on, which is why it's always greyed out. It's not like the screen has to 'find' where the picture begins and ends on the signal like with analogue.

Sounds like the guys looking at your monitor are total idiots sadly. Make sure you tell them that you know other people with the same screen and theirs doesn't have the fault. Personally I would be annoyed that Samsung didn't just swap it straight away and asked you to take it somewhere, but then my experiences with Samsung customer service in the past have been so unbelieveably atrocious that I'm not surprised.

Pheww, its all sorted!

The manager dealt with me and the two techies who dealt with me originally looked very sheepish upon my return…

It was all settled without question – I imagine they did ring Samsung for confirmation, but my new replacement was all ready and waiting for me on the shelf. And it’s another ‘A’ panel which is nice :p

That’s only the second time I’ve been to that shop on the industrial estate, and I won’t be hurrying back there! The only reason I was lured there in the first place was because of the price/stock.

After this example of incompetence, it’s no wonder they have such a shocking reputation

Thanks for the support guys!

SW.
