I'm thinking of buying a new monitor and it's probably going to be a wide screen but I'm wondering if it will be ok with games? do most/all games support it?

Most new games are starting to,if not,a quick edit of the config/ini file does the trick ;)

Lots of fixes over @ widescreengaming forums as well

I had similar concerns but the only game I've tried so far which doesn't work in native rez is Darkstar One.

One thing to remember is that while running in native res is the most optimal solution, games don't look THAT bad when running at a lower one with a black border or stretched to fit. At least, not fast paced ones where the screen is constantly updating and you haven't got time to sit around examining each and every pixel.

One question I would ask yourself, is are you likely to want to play many older games? Most games can render widescreen but there are some older ones which can't, even when messing with config/ini/registry etc. They have kinda hard-coded limits as to what you can choose.

Moving forward I'd expect pretty much all major titles to support widescreen, if not out of the box then it will get patched in.

Yeah mate, i've got it on: "C:\Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

But i'm sure it just stretches it

Any games that come out with the "Gaming for Windows" branding will have widescreen support. Most of the big ones from years gone by do, too. Max Payne, GTA Vice City to name a couple.

it doesnt stretch it....it just sets the game to play with the pixel size that is on the screen...puts everything back into proportion....its kinda weird. What you dont get with this game is the FOV like you get in others.

anyhow...looks like this at 1680x1050

Dont let anything put you off widescreen for gaming...IMO its miles better.

widescreens are cool. i have a 19 inch for my pc but at the moment im using a 32 inch HDTV for my screen and it rocks, like people have said, you can get "mods, hacks and edits" for most games but the people over at battlefield HQ say that "widescreen is an unfair advantege" so they havnt included it. just go find a hack for it.

most if not all steam games support widescreen as standerd and differnt aspect ratios eg 16:9, 16:10 , the defult being 4:9

if you want a widescreen go for it but be prepaird to look for those little modifications to some of your games to get the propper support for it

He was, but they use the same game engine.

BF2142 doesnt require any editing to make it work widescreen though, it will just auto-detect and away you go. At least thats how its been for me on my 19" WS and my buddies 20" WS.

It does use the same method as you'd normally have to use for BF2, except you won't have to do anything this time.

Pretty much any game which has been well coded should support widescreen, or any resolution you care to mention come to that - all they need to do is read from the resolutions defined in the graphics driver and be setup to handle that. For example even Quake, a game which is over 10 years old supports widescreen, narrowscreen, or even random-custom-rez-you-added-in-display-properties.
