Widescreen tft's for gaming?

Hi all, 1st poster here, although i have been lurking around reading the forums for a while. Plenty of knowledgeable folk around so i'm hoping i can glean some advice of you.

Ok, i wanna upgrade my 19" crt monitor to a 19" tft mainly for space.
But, was thinking about widescreen. Do the latest games take advantage of them? and do they look any good at 1400 x 900 (ish).
Or should i go for a standard 19" and play my games at 1280 x 1024 (with current setup of radeon 9800 pro)?

All advice greatly appreciated.

1440 x 900 gives you a wider field of vision in games like counter strike source. but check here for more info on games and support : http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

i use a 2 19" widescreens and I say go for one over a 4:3, as they are so nice

I went from a 17" normal to a 19" Wide a while back and have'nt look back, tbh I could never go back to those awefull square monitors

Was playing the Quake 4 demo earlier and looks a treat in WS, same can be said for mmorpg's, CoH and DoW demo's again both look superb.
Lets not forget the advantage to watching dvd's/tv on a WS as well.
The only hard thing about WS is choosing a monitor

I havent seen a 1600x1200 19" TFT? Atleast not recently anyway, think I might have seen one a few years ago :s

Yeah, just realised, don't most tft's only go up to 1280 x 1024? apart from WS tft's which as said go to 1440 x 900.

My main games are BF2, UT2004, Splinter Cells (can't wait for new one coming out in Nov?)

Concerning tft's, does the 19" WS have the same depth as the 17" box?

I'm thinking not, otherwise you could get a res of 1440 x 1024. Is my reasoning correct? Or am i talking moopoo!?

What do you mean by depth? 19" widescreen is less screen space in total compared to a 19" 5:4 screen, but it's better for viewing widescreen content. It doesn't have the same height as even a 17" 5:4 screen, but it's wider than a 19" 5:4. Btw you can get a 20" widescreen for £215 (LG L204WT).

Thanks fish99 thats very informative.
You were correct in assuming what i was trying to say as regards the 19" ws viewable depth being less than that of a standard 17".
So maybe if i buy a 19" WS tft then even with games that don't cater for it, i can just play with the black border on, no biggie.
