Widows poxy 10 updates

Nope Windows 8 you had control over updates - to fully take control of it requires more than registry editing - even with settings to "stop" it updating it will still periodically churn a load of CPU and Disc IO doing preparation for the next lot of updates, etc.

The whole thing is utterly stupid.
I don't understand how people are putting up with this I'm surprised there isn't a mass exodus back to Windows 7
Any machine that can run windows 10 can do windows 8 yes? Is it correct that some modern machines won't run Windows 7? I might see if there is a way to 'windows 8 ify' my new laptop when I get it (if I can't 'windows 7 ify').

Some newer hardware "isn't" supported but either works with minor feature loss or can be hacked to work but some stuff especially newer tablets don't have older OS driver support at all.

I'm surprised how many people just put up with it but the official Windows 10 discussion forum has been increasingly filling up with complaints about it over the last 2 weeks so maybe a wider number are finally realising.

Do you know if the Asus Zenbook Flip can be Windows 7'd with some hacking about? It has an Intel Core M3-6Y30 cpu

This sounds like a nightmare. Realistically if you aren't afraid to mess with regedit can you gain control of a Windows 10 machine? Like proper control, I'm reading horror stories all over the internet. Did Windows 8.1 do this too?

Gave that a try. It hasn't solved it.

Realistically, it looks like I'm going to have to clean install. At least I have a spare SSD.

OK it appears that I solved the 1709 Steam problem.

It wasn't Steam. DirectX9 was busted (consistently through several attempted updates and restores of previous version). Installed the DirectX9 Runtime setup as administrator and we're up and everything looks OK. Perhaps I should have twigged earlier because some games were running - I just hadn't worked out they were DX11 or DX12 or alternatie APIs.

Phew. That's saved me some messing about.

So it' updated again and yes sound stopped working. Have rolled back and now it will not boot into Windows. Missing files or something. So now I can not get into Windows at all. Way to go micronaffallsoft

My copy of Windows 10 is stuck on the version before the fall update because it will fail to load with the report that it's missing winitp.sys no mater how I try to install it. I presume that some component or other isn't compatible / is no longer supported because it works fine when I reload my back up (tried multiple downloads of the creation files used RUFUS and Microsoft USB keys - nothing works; including nuking the erasing the whole SSD - to be honest I was going to just ignore it but I'm not getting messages saying that I will no longer get security updates.. Also it insists on downloading the whole win10 ISO every time the pc is on and then fails to install it.. May have to bit the bullet and upgrade / replace the PC but to be honest I have no need to upgrade as it's plenty fast enough for my needs...
Anyone have any advice?

Meh. DirectX9 issue solved but now it's Visual C++ Runtime packages. Had some error message pop up about Apple software not working because of missing files related to them. Can't replace them, can't uninstall them without resorting to Microsoft's Program Install / Uninstall troubleshooter. This could get tedious.

I have some time off planned at Easter. If I'm still finding problems then, I'm going back to the clean install idea.

Windows 10 Pro is getting tempting, purely on the basis that you can actually postpone updates.
