was flicking through the tv last night and this lovely specimen was on (might of been on jonathon woss show :confused: )

This animal is a little (3-4 cm) crustacean that lives in the Pacific Ocean at the shores of the Western United States. In 2005 however there was an isolated incident where one of these creatures was was discovered in the United Kingdom (BBC link).

This little parasite enters the body of a fish (it prefers a spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus)) through the gills. After it is inside it attaches to the base of the tongue and starts sucking blood from the blood vessels of the tongue. For this it uses its modified claws.

After a while the tongue atrophies because it does not get enough blood. When this happens the louse (phylogenetically it is a crab) attaches its own body to the tongue moving muscles and replaces it functionally. This is the only known case when a parasite replaces an organ. The fish can use it as if it was its own tongue although it can't taste any more.

The parasite remains in the mouth till the fish lives and continues sucking blood from it.



 
One thing i love is deep sea nature programmes, sadly i've not seen many so they need to make more, they could show hours upon hours of footage of the life forms down there and discover new ones on each visit!

yeah, them ones with lazers and lights inside them are amazing to look at.
 
spongebob is class! :p

the second picture looks stoned, and i agree the dog human thing looks fake. the rest seem real, not sure about the resident evil dog though

I'm pretty sure the "zombie" dog is real, I think it's supposed to be the "world's ugliest dog".
