I have a friends Packard Bell PC to sort out. But its thrown me a curve Ball

The USB mouse and keyboard are not being recognized. Now they are seen before windows starts, Works fine to press F8, Works fine to go into bios and play with the settings. Of which i've altered USB legacy devices to enabled, Just incase. But as soon as windows starts, Both stop working. Lights off on the keyboard and lights off on the mouse. Which is a problem considering anything I want to try and do to solve this problem requires 1 or the other.

They don't work in safe mode, or command prompt only.

I also tried starting up the machine without either in, and pluggin the devices in afterwards to force a plug and play driver install. But the hard drive sounds like its doing something for 2 seconds and then nothing.

I'm starting to wonder if the drivers are missing for generic keyboard\mouse devices in windows, or something along those lines.

Try a Different keyboard/mouse and see if that works.

If that fails try a usb/ps2 converter .

They might well need some kind of driver, in which case that's pretty pants.
There should be no need to mess about with BIOS settings.

I've seen this exact thing with a Packard Bell machine before, I had to uninstall the USB root hubs and let windows re-install them before either the keyboard or mouse would work again, there is some sort of driver issue causing it.

I had this problem the other day when moving a pc.

Seems like the keyboard and mouse only worked in 1 combination in the usb slots.
So just keep mixing them around until it works maybe.
