I'm having issues accessing certain websites.

For example, i cannot currently connect to www.pistonheads.com

If i ping it, it resolves correctly. This is what happens when i run a traceroute:

Code:

I've tried switching from Virgin Medias own DNS to using Open DNS - same probelm

I've tried switching devices, i've used my laptop, my desktop and my phone via wifi - all have the same problem. No problem if i use my 3g connection however.

I've rebooted everything, including router etc.. and come to a dead end. Beyond contacting virgin and preying to the tech support gods i get somebody who knows what they are on about, any suggestions ?

I ran a speed test. I'm on Virgin 50mb and got this :

so its not timing out because of speed.

Its not just these 2 websites either. There are loads, and seemingly random.

this is where it gets really wierd.

I get a squid web proxy Access denied error !!!

http://209.85.227.105/ for www.google.co.uk works fine.

But http://195.225.218.139 gives me this :

ERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

Run these in order then restart.

netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

After the restart do the flush/register dns again and then see where we are.

If you having problems then virgin media have known issues tonight with certain sites. Same for us here.

The BBC is another prime site that either times out completely or loads very very slowly - even though speed tests and the DNS all check out fine. I also struggled getting cnet to load.

I'm currently using my 3G connection instead as i got fed up of finding sites that wouldn't load. No doubt it will be fixed by tomorrow morning though.

EDIT: That said our is slowly working better now. Some of the broken sites are now working fine again though there are still one or two little issues still to be fixed.

I posted on the VM forums and they suggested to try using VMs web proxy

webcache.virginmedia.com:8080

and huzzah ! my internet is back to full speed again. Definitely issues on their network.

It hasn't sorted my slow download speed on the app store for my iphone when using wifi, but i can at least use the internet properly while they fix it.

Just back to your traceroute info for a second, I get the same response from the last few hops when checking from a BE ADSL connection. It looks like in both cases your 'default' traceroute gets to the penultimate hop; try using the -I or -T switches with elevated privileges (assuming *nix OS).
