Wifi 6 router suggestions

Hey everyone. I upgraded to 1Gb internet on Virgin Media and the Hub 4 doesn't have wifi 6 and only a 1Gbit ethernet port. It looks like it might be many months before they actually start sending the Hub 5 out to people so I'm looking to grab a decent router (which will no doubt be better then the hub5 anyway) that supports wifi 6 (maybe even wifi 6E?) and has 2.5Gbit ports.

I've done some research on best routers but there's quite a few out there. The Asus line I've used in the past and they've been solid enough but wanted to make sure there's not some new brand or type of router that is way better now.

Any suggestions?

The Zenwifi xt8 does look great, the only let down is not enough 2.5gbit ethernet ports. I'm not sure how I'd get the full 1gig speeds to the xt8 and then down CAT6 to my main rig. Bonding two ports on the Hub4 and two on the zenwifi is fine but then no single 2.5gbit port for the cat6.

It looks like the ASUS AX6000 could be a good option though, bond two of the ethernet ports then use one of the 10gbit ports for my main rig.

Something which worth considering before splashing out on an expensive router. Are you really going to ultilise the full 1Gb speed as a single user? Which site will even offer that sort of bandwidth to serve you.

That sort of speed tend to be better suited in a busy household which the 1Gb connection is shared.

It's a good point and well... no I will hardly ever really utilise it but I'm on Overclockers and leaving 20% of the speed even if I'll barely notice it irritates me irrationally like tech OCD. It's an expensive habit I can't rationalise without justifying it weird ways to myself.

Really the main issue is the wifi speed to my laptop, it's less than half the speed it could be and while it's usually no issue I do take a lot of photos sometimes and transferring them over to my NAS can take a little while so it would be good to get wifi 6 from the hub 4 at least somehow. If I could get that working with some wifi6 thing from the hub4 then I could probably subdue the incoming 1Gb OCD for a year or two.

It looks like the RT-AX89-X won't work with the hub 4 by bonding ports without having a managed switch in between, so that's kind of annoying.

Wait. This is all still relatively new technology. If you want WiFi6 now then the Huawei AX-3 will bury anything from ASUS and it’s £30-£50 depending on the offer. 2.5GbE really gives you nothing unless you have a heavy transfer requirement for making YouTube videos or something like that.

I have a Huawei AX-3 in my office for my Quest 2, it works well for what it does. It also has gigabit ethernet though and transferring large amounts of data to and from my NAS wouldn't be optimal.

Then get an AX3 for WLAN and a cheap 4-port 2.5GbE switch. Then the data will go directly from the PC to the NAS without seeing the router.
