Hi
Ok i have this wifi adapter
dell-wireless-1450-usb-adapter_170587854299.jpg

(Dell 1450)

I cracked it open and found something that looks like a u.fl connecter

My plan is to use one of these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360351593895

and then this yagi

Does anyone know if this will work and what range id get after the mod
im not sure if that is actualy a u.fl connecter on the board
can anyone confirm this?

Er, why are you doing this - do you need wireless at the end of your garden or something? The Dell is a b/g wireless, have you thought about using N instead? Iirc they have greater range.
Also the delivery on the yagi - 23 working days - thats almost 5 weeks :0

Well basicaly i live in a hostel with no phone line etc
the only way i can get wifi is from some unencrypted wifi across the road from me
since im on 3rd floor i just need a bit of a extra boost from the adapter
Also im a bit straped for cash atm so im doing this with cheap parts that i can get ahold of
i dont mind waiting for a bit for the parts realy :)

Using a directional antenna such as the Yagi should boost your reception distance considerably. It basically will turn your reception bubble from spherical to a elongated ellipse. A good yagi will allow hundreds if metres line of sight. Whether this £5 item is a good yagi remains to be seen.

I've seen a few homemade ones on YouTube that supposedly work well including cantennas and one made out of White foam plastic and copper wire.

These yagi seem quite small, I wonder if their listed gain is an exaggeration.
