Hi Everyone, I need internet access to my laptop whilst i'm working away next month, my laptop has a wireless card, but it only just picks up my home router and sometimes that's a struggle, plus it's only 11mbps wifi card on my laptop so I need a new faster USB stick or external usb/ethernet device, plus as most of the time I will be in hotels and mobile, I wanted to find out if I can connect a mobile antenna to ensure I keep connection, I've been having a look around, but cannot find anything, can anyone help

Thanks

no, it's inbuilt into the laptop

my laptop has a PCMCIA slot, usb and ethernet, so I've got a few options, my works have given me a external antenna with a MC (SMA) connector on the end and say i need something with one of those connectors, I've been having a look but not having much luck, I can find loads of PCI cards with that connector, but nothing usb or PCMCIA wise.

Also the device must be powered via the laptop as I wont be near a power source.

I was looking at the usb sticks, but a few colleagues at work have used them and say they are a waste of time.

That doesn't mean that there isn't an antenna connected to it - all the miniPCI cards I've seen in laptops have had antennas connected to them. Mine (I think) has the antenna behid the TFT panel.

Personally, I'd avoid USB - it sucks for networking.

just taken the panel off the underside of my laptop and there is two wires coming from the card, one says main and the other says aux, the connectors are a very very small plug,(nothing i've ever seen before) the wires vanish into the laptop somewhere.

Is there any kind of antenna that will fit these small plugs then?

They'll be micro SMA connectors. If you followed the wires to the end, you'd find a couple of antennas there.

Replacing them isn't going to be easy, getting to them may be hard and then finding and installing a replacement of the same physical size will be a pain.
