Wifi card not working as well as it should

I have an Edimax wireless card with two massive antennas. I don't know the specific name but OcUK sold it for a while and apparently doesn't anymore (it was the most expensive card out of the selection).

For some reason it just absolutely struggles to get a decent signal from my router - it's absolutely atrocious, abysmal and woeful. I know it's the card because I have literally dumped my laptop next to the base unit on the floor, as well as my iPhone right under the antennas - they both say 7.5mb/s on speedtest.net but the desktop only manages a pitiful 1.2mb/s. What gives?

It's been like this all the time, and now I'm getting tired of it. It's been getting worse lately that the connection is being dropped infrequently. What could be the source of the issue? If it's the card itself, I will be very angry because it was the most expensive on the site (I had the same problem with a cheapo £5 wifi card, and OcUK members were telling me to get the Edimax to replace it), and all the user reviews said it was supposed to be one of the best on the market.

I'm at a loss here. What can generally be done to diagnose and fix underperforming network cards? It is guaranteed to be the desktop/wifi card itself - as I have said, laptops and phones in the exact same area can pick up nearly 100% signal strength from my router. I refuse to believe my crappy £200 laptop that's 6 years old has a better wifi card than one of the top-end desktop wifi cards.

edit: I'm fairly sure it's the Edimax EW-7727IN card.
