I'm about to build my first PC and I need use wifi since I can't really run a cable through the House. I have a standard but older version of the Virgin Media Netgear routers, can be upgraded to the latest 2G/5G if it's worth it.

Could you please recommend me the best bang for buck PCI wifi card?

I'm unsure about the quality of wiring in the house i'm renting at the moment (I'm also a student so I'll be moving often). Is there any way of telling how effective they will be in a house?

It depends what you will be using them for really. I had a couple of cheap chinese import wireless-n USB sticks that worked fine for streaming movies internally but were not great on latency for gaming. I ended up with one of these and was very happy with it. All depends on the wireless signal really though.

Pretty sure that usb dongles are resticted by the amount of data it can process where PCI isnt atm, correct me if im wrong.
However i have just got a asus PCE-AC68 pci card couple days ago and i got a 10-15mb increase in speed over a usb tp-link wireless adapter.
I'm pleasantly surprised with the increase in speed considering that im useing a crappy HomeHub-3 router.

The asus PCE-AC68 is pricey but reviews on them are great, in fact on the Trusted Reviews website they say that the pce-ac68 has not yet bottled necked.:D

What model tp link usb adapter where you using?

I would recommend a PCI-E or PCI card over a USB dongle if you're confident in fitting it. I found my PCI-E card far more stable although mine was only Wireless G it was still using all of my connection when I was getting 23Mbits through my connection. When I upgraded to 40/10 Fibre it couldn't cope though. I now use a set of 5GHz wireless bridges without issue.

If you are going down either the USB or PCI-E adaptor route rather then Powerline. (you can take them with you and move them around) then remember to go for one which can be positioned away from your PC. Not much point in getting a lovely PCI-E adaptor with aerials on the back and then have them all sandwiched against the wall.

Some now do either an extension cable for the USB and again a stand and cable extension for the pci-e versions.

I'm currently leaning towards getting the ASUS PCIE card but I was wanted to compare it (in terms of price and all the other specifications) to which ever dongle sephiroth originally had. The asus is quite expensive considering that I don't have a router that could take full advantage of it. But then it should last a decent amount of time i think or is that too optimistic?

Very good point. Out of all the cards OCUK sells and that i can find that would only leave the ASUS one.

With most USB adaptors you could just use a USB extension lead. that is all they basically are that you get with the Asus ones. they just come with a pretty stand as well.
