So my next door neighbour has opened a coffee shop in the town centre and has asked me to setup WiFi for her customers as she keeps getting asked for it. She already has a BT homehub in there so i've just enabled the wireless, changed the wireless key to something easier than the default, showed her how to change this on a weekly basis

I've made it so you can only access the internet during the hours of 8am - 5pm which is their opening hours, and i've stuck parental controls to stop people surfing p0rn etc ...

From a legal side, is there anything i or she needs to be aware of?

you would probably want to make it so that most ports other than http and chat programs are closed to stop people using p2p

also make sure the password on the router is very strong

you should also say something like coffe shop owner is not liable for loss of files damage to equipment use at your own risk ect

One option is to charge them for the wireless password and change it each day or week.

She needs to have an agreement with a visible set of conditions for using the service such as no illegal activities, no indecent images, racial hatred etc..

who mentioned anything about business PCs? no one ...

I believe he was only asking as you mentioned there was already a BT homehub in place which could have already been there for business use. For obvious security reasons running them on the same network wouldn't be a good idea. You asked for suggestions, he was only offering.

Yes you're right, I subscribe to BT Broadband and have a Home Hub with nothing connected to it. I bought it because I wanted more flashing lights.

I apologise for trying to highlight possible security issues, in future I will keep quiet. After all it's obvious you know what you're doing otherwise you would have asked for help.

Oh wait...

I was asking for legal guidance, not technical or hardware guidance ... thank you very much pal

I may be wrong but dont you have to get a special BB package to use in such a way, as in not their standard residintial service.

Obviously as the contract holder she is responsible for any traffic on the connection so appropriate steps should be taken to make sure it is not used for illegal uses.

Just make sure the required security is set up properly. Are you using open dns at all? There is some brilliant features for free. Google open dns. Because she is using it in a business environment she would need a disclaimer to the users to make sure she is well protected, even with the security is properly set up it's best to have a user disclaimer put up around the coffee shop to make people aware.

You have to think how you could make alittle money out of it here too even if it is alittle bit of extra cash.

Does the Home Hub support wireless client seperation?

To be honest I'd be inclined to get a proper AP designed for this kind of thing. There's no need to run security on the thing at all, it's just an extra step that your customers don't need to be hassled with.

Have a Google for "captive portal"
