WiFi interference in apartment blocks

I'm moving into a new-build apartment block (won't be finished until 2015). I worked out there will be 264 apartments in a building 110 metres long and 28 metres wide (33 floors).

I would expect that most people would have Wi-Fi in their apartments by this time, and I am dreading to think what the interference would be like.

Do you think this is going to be a real problem? And are there any solutions which might be available by the time I move in, in 2015/2016?

You can use various tools to find out what channels local wifi to you is using and then pick the one with least interference. Having a router (and equipment) using 5GHz wireless is an option if the standard 2.4GHz band is very busy.

I'm guessing a purpose built apartment block will have pretty thick walls, so don't think it will be too bad.

In the experience I have, there could be considerable overlap on the 2.4Ghz range depending on how the building is built.

As mentioned above, using the 5Ghz range would be a good idea

Surely, there will be a default setting on the routers as channel 1 in the 2.4GHz range. Just change it to any channel that isn't used. Apartment blocks usually have very thick walls to keep sound in as well as heat and much more. I don't know what you're worrying about. You're thinking too much about it. Even if you could hide your SSID and use 5GHz if possible. There is many ways to avoid interference.

Worrying about WiFi 2 years before the place is even built, that's dedication to getting online!
