This may be a silly question, but If I download the appropriate local Google maps, can I use this as a sat nav whilst out and about? It certainly has GPS, will it track us ok?

Thanks!

It does need a data connection.

Google maps only allows you to download a small geographical area. If you want to use your Tab as a SatNav why not buy something like Co-pilot. The maps for this are stored in memory. I use CoPilot on my original 7inch Galaxy and it works well.

Regards.

In theory your idea of using google maps would work although tethering via wifi hotspot may be needed if you go outside of the downloaded areas.

Personally if I was in your situation (and I'm going to install this on my new phone too just in case) I would download something like Navfree and the UK maps instead.

I've used this exact app on my nexus 7 for navigation, in some respects its actually quicker than google maps although you do lack things like real time traffic etc.
One little side note about it - check before you leave that you do have the maps installed, I've 'lost' the map once for some strange reason.
