So we have DSL & the modem/router combo is upstairs & we have a VoIP service, but the phone is downstairs. Is their a way we can receive wifi down stairs & the device would let us plug in with ethernet?
Powerline is definitely an option worth exploring. Unless you're really unlucky with your wiring they'll normally be a better bet than wireless for fixed equipment.
If you want to use wireless then any router that has a client mode should work. The TP-Link TL-WR702N 'Nano' router is a neat device if you can live with its slight limitations.
