Hi, so I have an Oculus quest. I want to use ALVR to be able to play my Oculus Quest games wirelessly. It requires a 5ghz modem connection. Sadly my PC is not in the same room as the moderm and therefore the interference causes the streaming to not be very good.

My idea was to buy a 5ghz modem, install it in my PC room, connect it t my PC via ethernet, make it repeat the signal, and then that way I can use my Oculus Quest wirelessly as it'll literally be like 1M away from the router which is connected by ethernet.

However I don't know if this is possible, what I'll have to buy etc.

Can someone please assist me on this?

So I'm not sure of the reference to a modem in the context of the question. I'm going to assume that your current 'modem' is in fact your router and that isn't in the same room as your PC and VR gear? I also don't really know anything about the Oculus but for the purposes of trying to give some helpful advice, I'm going to assume that it has a requirement to connect to the same network as your PC wirelessly and that it requires a high amount of bandwidth due to the 5Ghz requirement?

That being the case the problem here is that 5Ghz can do high throughput but has limited range. Thus your Oculus is connecting but crapping out?

The solution, as you have alluded to, is bring the wireless access to your network closer to your Oculus. Now you say something is connected to your router by ethernet? What is? Do you have an ethernet cable running form your router in one room to your PC which is in the same room as the Oculus? If so then you're in a good spot. What you need to do is add a Wireless Access Point supporting the specification you need on the end of the ethernet cable in your PC room. If there's only one cable and it goes into your PC then add a switch and then run off the switch to your PC and your new Access Point.

If I'm wrong in my assumption then can you run an ethernet cable from your router to the PC/Oculus room? If so then do so and follow the above. If you can't run a cable then your options include (in order of preference):
  • Introduce a mesh setup to bring 5Ghz wifi closer
  • Use powerline instead of a proper cable to introduce an ethernet port in your PC/Oculus room and put an access point on that (you can buy powerline/WAP combined)
  • Use some sort of wireless repeater
I can't bring myself to recommend anything other than the first bullet if you can't run a proper cable because I've had such mixed results with the other ways of doing it.

Sadly my PC is too far away to connect to my router through ethernet.

I have heard of a mesh setup. BT did provide us with some mesh discs but they were utter crap.

My solution was going to be to buy a new router and just use it as a separate LAN network for streaming to the oculus quest via 5ghz.
