Wifi Router and Internet Sharing Help

I'm having a big problem with our network connection at the minute.

We have a Speedtouch 510 v6 adsl modem and a Netgear MR814 v2 Wifi router.
The problem is this:

Wired connection from modem to router = success

Connect the modem to the router and I can access the modem and it's settings using ip 192.168.1.254, however I cannot browse the internet.

Now the modem's manual is next to useless but I can confirm the following:

The login details are stored on the modem and arew correct.
The router also stores pptp (not ppoe or ppoa) settings and passwords. I have tried putting in the login details there as well as leaving it as the connection does not require a login and neither works. i'm not sure what to try now. :confused:
 
I take it your modem gives you internet access when connected directly to a PC?

Is there a setting in your router for DHCP under Internet? You shouldn't need any username/password entry for your router.
 
It connects fine when wired, but as soon as I connect the modem/router to the wireless router it looses adsl sync. I have tried disabling dhcp on the wireless router and using the speedtouch's routing function through an ethernet port insted of a wan port, but to no avail.

As it's ppoa I do need a passowrd and user id to connect but i'm not sure what to do now. I have tried the modem in bridging mode and setting up pptp via the netgear wifi router but that failed as well.

The annoying thing is that this setup was working fine for a month before the power supply blew and had to be replaced. Maybe that has caused a problem.
 
If the modem loses actual sync when you connect it to the router then it sounds like the modem is defective. I forgot about the PPPOA thing, although an ethernet adsl modem would surely have a web interface where you could enter name/password rather than dial-up through windows wouldn't it?
 
The Speedtouch 510 is an ADSL router isn't it? It's not just a modem which would mean you're using two routers, a scenario that is not ideal. I would advise simply using your Netgear as an AP/switch rather than as a router. Just plug the Speedtouch into one of the Netgear's LAN ports and leave the WAN port free, then disable the Netgear's DHCP server.

This way the Speedtouch will be handling all the routing and DHCP duties, while the Netgear is acting as a wireless AP and gives you a few more ethernet ports due to it also acting as a switch.

Edit: Just read your post above :rolleyes: So are you saying that the ADSL sync is lost as soon as you plug the Netgear in? Do you mean that you just can't get out to the Internet or that the router's sync light literally goes off?

I've already tried letting the Speedtouch handle the routing and use the netgear as an access point.

If I turn on the speedtouch adsl modem, it powers on and then syncs and connects to the internet. However as soon as I attatch the ethernet cable to the netgear wifi router, even if it is just acting as an access point, the adsl line cannot sync :(
