Ahoy mates of the ship,

I'm currently waiting for internet to be sorted out in my house, but for whatever reason it's going to take a while, so I'm looking at alternatives here.

I have use of a wi-fi network secured with WPA, however, the signal is extremely weak. There is only one point in the entire house that can get a signal, so I have my laptop up there and it gets about 4-5 bars which is fine.

Now, what is the best way for me to bounce the signal from the laptop to my main computers? I've currently got ad hoc setup and that works to some extent but the signal seems weaker and the speed fluctuates a little bit at times.

I have a Netgear DGND3300 which seems to be a fairly capable router. Is there any way I can use this to pick up the wireless signal, or at least transmit it from the laptop instead of the wifi adapter(s) doing it via ad hoc?

Is there anything else I can do that may work? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Tested a few Netgear routers and found that the repeater modes do not support WPA, Just WEP! Extenders/Repeaters only really work well if they have a good signal to extend in the first place. Have you thought about a router that supports 3G I get a great signal on Vodafone 3G No speed issues for general browsing.

I've not tried it but maybe this would work:

Laptop (connected to wi-fi network) ---> Crossover ethernet cable to WAN port of NetGear Router (if the router supports Auto MDI-X, it won't have to be a crossover cable).

I'd imagine that you'd have to bridge the network adapters on your laptop, and/or enable internet connection sharing. I haven't tried this before, but it might work.
