WiFi streaming problem

For ages I’ve had my HTPC connected to my other system just via 802.11g (through a router, other system using CAT5). All was fine, I could stream MP3 and video although there wasn’t really enough bandwidth to stream HD content.

Recently something seems to have broken though and I don’t know what it can be as I don’t think anything has changed. It will still stream (using VLC or Media Player) but every minute or so there will be a slight pause, less than a second but obviously annoyingly noticeable. This even happens with pretty low bit-rate MP3s so it’s not a bandwidth issue. It’s also very regular and always just a small length of time before playback resumes normally.

Any clue what could be causing this? I’m using the latest Netgear DG834G router and PCI WiFi adapter with Windows handling the connection (although the card’s own software is also loaded).

Running Vista? Read this article and see if it helps. Worked for me due to very regular periodic lag spikes interupting my gaming. Test by pinging any website through the DOS prompt with the -t option.
