Hi,

I wish to make a WiFi connection with my computer.

I have a computer with broadband, and wish to purchase another computer which i want to link to my existing interenet connection via WiFi.

The existing computer will be "hardwired" to the modem, and the new computer wifi linked.

But i want the connection on the newly purchased computer not to be dependent on the existing computer being switched on (ie, i can still access the internet on the new computer when the old computer is switched off)

I hope i have made this clear as possable, i just want to know if this is possable, if so what kinds of brands/kits can i purchase to enable this.

Thanks.

You could just add a wireless access point.

Unless the original modem is actually a router, you couldn't.

To the OP: You've missed out what kind of connection you've got, i.e. cable or ADSL, and what modem you've got already.

Yes, I missed that line.

I have a Cable modem (with NTL) Broadband. Connected via ethernet, it just has one ethernet port and one usb port (can choose either to use)

You could just add a wireless access point

Would this enable me to achieve what my goal is? ie. i dont have to switch on my "main" computer in order for the wireless computer to have internet access?

You need a wireless router, for example the Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL or Netgear RP614.

In that case instead of the wireless access point, you would need one of these:

I can't find it on OC (I got mine from them originally) but they are available on other sites. You would plug the ethernet from your cable modem to the WAN input on the linksys and then you could connect your wired PC to the linksys and use wireless for the other PC. This would let you do want you want.

Thanks, so this is the only piece of kit i would need?

Which wifi card ("the reciever") would you recommend for the computer to recieve the wifi signal?

Thanks, (sorry im not too technical with my language)

Thanks again

For easy installation and I setup I'd go for a usb adaptor, I got my dad the Linksys WUSB54GS usb wireless adapter:
