Hi all,

I heard that the Wii will be able to play N64 and GameCube titles. is this still the case?

If so, i think I'll get buying up some gems.

Thanks all,
TM

it will play any GC games from what i've heard (you need to have the physical game ;)), and it will play older games from things like the SNES, NES, Megadrive etc if they are released to buy on the Wii shop via the virtual console.

Whilst it's never going to be every Snes/Nes etc game, I suspect it's going to be a large number:)

Cheers guys,

well, i wouldn't mind buying a Wii and a huge bag full of cheap GC games to tide me over. I'd want to play through some of the Zeldas and Metroid Primes before playing the Wii ones. Im a Nintendo virgin, so any tips a welcome :)

If you're looking at Gamecube games, I highly recommend Eternal Darkness. It's just superb, and I hope they bring a sequel out for the Wii.

GameCube games aren't that cheap, especially the first party titles such as Zelda. You'll probably be able to get all the greats for under £20 each but there aren't many £5 bargains floating around like on the PS2.

Damn, thats what I was hoping for.

Will the Wii play GC games from any region? I.e. JAP/NTSC titles or only PAL?

Thanks,
TM

Not out of the box, but you can use the GameCubes FreeLoader to play imports.

It'll only play GC games from the same region as your Wii unfortunately, so PAL most likely.

EDIT: Utterly forgot about Freeloader, and it's confirmed as working with the Wii too, so if you can grab one of those, you're sorted.

And firstly, you'll need a GC pad to play them on the Wii with, since the remote doesn't have enough buttons/sticks to simulate a GC pad. Get a Wavebird (the official wireless pad) if you can, as they're ace.

Secondly, your best bet for cheap GC games is second-hand online, or pre-owned from stores. Second hand GC games are usually in pretty good nick, so you won't end up with horribly scratched discs or anything, and they'll be a fair bit cheaper. If I had to recommend just a handful from the GC's library, have a look at Zelda: Wind Waker (pref. with the Ocarina of Time bonus disc), Metroid Prime, MGS: Twin Snakes, Resident Evils 0, 1, and 4 (the others are straight ports so only worth playing if you've not played them on the PSX), and depending on how many friends you have (and whether you really want to buy three more controllers), Super Monkey Ball (worth it for single player in fact, but twice as fun in multi), Mario Party, WarioWare, Smash Bros and Donkey Konga.

Lastly, from what there is to download for the virtual console at the moment (which isn't much), you wouldn't go wrong getting Mario 64, but the rest are up to you really. Most of the Nintendo stuff was ace at the time, but probably hasn't aged too well. There's some better stuff due out soon though. :)
