Wii aspect ratio?

Can anyone answer this one for me as google doesn't yield much, are the aspect ratios on the wii selectable? I have a 4:3 sharp aquos that can do 480p nicely. I don't want to bother though if I'm going to have to have black bars on everything I play.

You can choose 4:3 or 16:9 in the Wii menu.

480p is 16:9 by definition, you can't change that. The choices are: 4:3, 16:9 or 480p.

Reason I'm confused is that I know my tv does 640 x 480 and 1024 x 768. Now in the manual it says it does 480p, and it's a 4:3 screen.

Incorrect, you can choose 480p and 4:3 on the Wii.

I noticed Red Steel forces 16:9 with black bars in 4:3 mode. As far as I know this is the only title tha does this so far.

FPS games are better in widescreen but I think in that case it's probably because the game was unfinished.
