Wii component cables...

Hi all,

So I just bought a rather nice Samsung UE40ES5500, upgrading from my ages old and excessively massive 32" CRT thing.

I've hooked my Wii up to this via a cheapish component cable which I bought some time ago, and the picture looks genuinely terrible- moreso than I was expecting (and moreso than the internets led me to believe would be the case; jaggies doesn't even BEGIN to describe it)- and yes, I've set it to 480p.

My question is: can the quality of a component cable greatly impact the quality of the output? In short, would I be significantly better off buying an official Nintendo one?

Appreciate any input or advice, cheers all :-)

1 - 480p has more jaggies than 576i as it is a lower resolution.
2 - LCD's are nasty for SD content, especially compared to CRT's.
3 - The Wii has many jaggies, which are softened by CRT's.

I understand this, and as I mentioned I don't expect it to be perfect, but I feel it's worse than it need be. Are all component cables created equally, though? Thanks for the reply :)

Looks fine (but not perfect) on a 1080p 22" TV via an official component lead, but then again this is far smaller area to display that what you are using

I have both an official cable and a 3rd party from play-asia, both look the same. I suppose a really crappy 3rd party could be worse, but I would have thought it would just pop up as interference or ghosting, rather than just looking like crap.

I would suspect it looks as it should and the people online saying it looks much better is just difference of opinion.

I much prefer playing mine over RGB scart on a crt.

Far from it actually, the cable can make quite a difference.

Thanks for the replies, everybody. I did some further playing- I turned on widescreen mode on the Wii itself (somehow I'd forgotten to do so - d'oh) - and turned down the sharpening on the TV. Looks much better now.
