Potential Wii-owners will likely be most interested in Iwata's comments on WiiConnect24, the Wii's online network. Unlike Xbox Live, which makes users download demos, WiiConnect24 will automatically deliver Wii and DS demos to any connected console--presumably at the user's discretion

"Let's say your Wii is connected to the Internet in a mode that allows activation on a 24-hour basis," explains Iwata. "This would allow Nintendo to send monthly promotional demos for the DS, during the night, to the Wii consoles in each household. Users would wake up each morning, find the LED lamp on their Wii flashing, and know that Nintendo has sent them something. They would then be able to download the promotional demo from their Wiis to their Nintendo DSes."

I quite like the idea of it automically downloading DS demos on to the Wii.

I do too but I don't know about leaving the Wii on all night long. No idea why though as I leave my PCs running a lot.
I think they said you don't have to have it switched on all night, it only has to be on standby which they said uses the same power as a miniture light bulb.

Does the Wii have any storage medium? definitely cant have a HD due to the size so i presume they'll use memory cards, which wont be able to hold all that much

Maybe an external HD?

512mb flash memory as standard if memory serves (and I think GC and SD external memory).

I sort of guessed this would be happening a few weeks ago when the first comment about it being able to act as a hub/remain online 24/7 was made :)

Don't paticularly like the idea of a console using a net connection on its own. Many people have bandwidth caps.

I would guess it would be able to be switched off as well.

I suspect it would also use very little bandwidth when on, as the DS only has a few mb of ram for download play, and the wii doesn't have much storage space to waste (I wouldn't be suprised if most of the time it uses next to no bandwidth and just sends the ocassional ping to let the nintendo servers know it's online, much the same as an idle PC etc would to the ISP).

what i was thinking, but sounds like a good idea other than that.

If you have bandwidth caps disable the feature. It's a great option for those who can use it. Will be nice turning your Wii on and playing something different a lot of the times.
