Wii DVD Player...

strange choice, it just highlights the technology gap given what the other consoles can do.

mono ??? surely stereo at least ??

Yeah that too. Seriously though I have seen loads of the 14" Tvs and the like in kids rooms with a PS2 and a stack of DVD (not that I make a habit of going into kids rooms).

and you know what I mean. not everyone has a 5.1 setup

people dont understand thats a misleading article all they are doing as at a certain date chucking in dvd ability, its not a special edition, every wii form that point will be dvd

i think this is a pointless move. they stated that they were leaving out dvd functionality becuase everyone has a dvd player. now they're putting it back in as a hardware revision at a later date....

Wow I can't wait to watch my dvds with totally immersive DOLBY PRO LOGIC II AUDIO!!!

Addition of an optical or co-ax passthrough for surround sound is pretty much a given - as unlike doing 5.1 sound in game it doesn't require any additional hardware (and is why even the most dirt cheap DVD player will have such an output).

Like the unacceptably noisy optical drive on the 360 for instance + inferior sound output compared to an average standalone DVD player.

What's up with the 360 optical out ?

A different CPU won't offer any new features though. And what's free?
the dvd ability.
what is happening is they are just going to shove in a dvd player form a certain date, in the same way ds's became ds lite, people are moaing about it but what they dont realise its a free thing is always a good thing

Do you have any links to articles saying this as that’s not how I have seen it reported anywhere. Happy to be wrong in this case but everything I have seen is that there will be a different wii at a higher price point with DVD playback. See the below article which seems to be taken directly from a Nintendo rep.

IMO this seems like a totally pointless move, as others have said how many people don't have a DVD player? Is it really something people would be willing to pay more for especially considering this is going to be released in the second half of next year by which time the HD wars should be starting to come to mainstream consumers.

hmm well that article is interesting the one i read on wiifanboy led me to believe it was a free upgrade but i think i read yesterdays article as i didnt see one that had a kinda interview in it, looks like it aint free then. it all depends on if the dvd player is good and how much more it is now.

Apparently Nintendo would have had to paid a license fee if they included DVD playback. And yes Im sure some parents would buy the upgrade via Wii points if it meant reducing the clutter in little Johnnys bedroom (youre talking and extra scart cable, power cable and in some cases a scart switch box)
Presumably DVD playback would be on a Wii channel ?
As for comparisons to HD, thats like saying, who wants MP3 playback on a console when you can have FLAC?
