Wii DVD Player...

I wouldn't buy it for a DVD player, I already have a multi region one myself.

It is a mistake to buy any console based upon what move formats they play.

I do not think this addon is aimed at anyone that is using this in their living room. I think it is aimed at the children ( & possibly students) who are going to have this in their bedroom. and have limited space/budget

DVD players can be had for about £30 so no one in their right mind would buy a games console solely for the DVD player aspect.

I don't have a dvd player in my home because we have 3 consoles capable of dvd playback. I'd rather have something that can play dvds and games at the same time than an extra item on the tv stand (especially since we have a gamecube, dreamcast and skybox on it already). As has been mentioned, it's also one less input on the tv, so I don't have as many cables lying around.

It's not the only reason I have these consoles, but it is definately a selling point, and the reason our 360 is allowed to be on the living room tv ;).

You kind of fall into the Space/money argument. You are right it is a selling point. But my argument was that you would not buy the console soley for the DVD playback, its just a perk or something that tips the scales.

You (well I) buy consoles based upon how they meet my needs/desires as a gamer. The other stuff is just nice to have and is only use in comparision if there is nothing between the consoles in terms of core features (Gameplay, Game library, Online play, power, advances from previous gen, etc)

BTW the 360 does exeptional DVD playback. I doubt many DVD players under £100 would give you as good a DVD player.

The 360 struggles to beat my 4 year old £70 Toshiba that uses S-video, and the Tosh DVD wins hands down in sound.
As you say its nice to have it in a console, but the noise, heat and power consumption of the 360 is off putting for anything other than gaming IMO.
My most convienent DVD player for the kids to keep them quite is the laptop, the Wii due to its size and quietness would be a welcome secondary DVD player.

Day one releases I will agree to the noise and heat. The recently relesed consoles are silent (or near as damn it) and are a bit cooler.

Is your DVD player the 330e? Thats the model I have and I would say that Toshibia are by far the best sub £100 DVD players (which is why I the 360 would beat most DVD players. I never said ALL dvd players)

But IMO the 360 after its numerious updates actually has a very decent DVD feature which does a lot of things you would not expect a sub £100 dvd player to do. (obviously the 360 is not a sub £100 DVD player it is a £210 Games console with DVD playback functions)

In terms of picture and sound I find it hard to belive that your Svideo is better. Sorry I have a Toshiba 330e and I know that I can not see a difference in the component output between the 2 players. But the Component is noticibly better than the Svideo.
Personally I think the Sound Sounds the same on my DVD player and 360. I have noticed that Some DTS tracks do not play on the 360, I'm not sure why this is, but this is the only area that the Toshiba is better.

Edit: Bloody Hell. I get moaned at for saying that games consoles are Not supposed to be DVD players. Then when I comment on how I think one console does a relitively good job at DVD playback I get moaned at again.

Apparently Nintendo would have had to paid a license fee if they included DVD playback. And yes Im sure some parents would buy the upgrade via Wii points if it meant reducing the clutter in little Johnnys bedroom (youre talking and extra scart cable, power cable and in some cases a scart switch box)

I kind of see your point here but most kids I know already have a ps2 in their room, or will get one as the parents get a new system in the lounge room. I don't think there is that much of a market looking for something just for saving space/cables given DVD playback is already included in the ps2, xbox and 360 all of which could well be cheaper than the wii with DVD (assuming you compare it against the core 360, which is only £20 more expensive then the wii currently). Then consider that the vast majority of kids games are released on all systems and I don’t really see this appealing to parents.

Not as a selling point, but once the Wii is in kids bedrooms, dens, games rooms etc, and PS2 is sold at the car boot sale I still think its something that would get used, I dont think its crucial either way though, and I dont think cost comes into it, the switch box I want costs more than a DVD player :(

Hehe, I would prefer consoles went back to cartridge format anyway and forget about optical media.
Yes we have the SD-330e, by no means a high end DVD it was only £70 odd quid, but when the 360 first came out people started moaning about the quality, so I compared the two and couldnt tell the difference video wise, and replied to posts at the time, (Tosh is on S-video), but during the week I put some MP3s on the 360 and the music was dull, it had no punch or liveliness about it, and I felt movie soundtracks were compromised too, this was back to back comparisons on the same amp. And when playing custom sound tracks in games the sound is dire, maybe it needs some tweaking with settings on the amp to bring it out, or maybe its faulty.

This is exciting news, so it's going to get something that the PS2 had in 2000 and the Xbox had in 2001... wow.

LOL the PS2 was also marketed at videophiles when it was released, and ended up with a bad reputation for DVD playback.
And sony are still marketing the PS3 at videophiles who want Blue ray, its just a toy

It's not a bad thing. I don't see why such a fuss is made of it though? They've dropped DVD from the current Wii - presumably as a cost reducer at both ends - with a view to re-introduce it later.

It would suit the Wii; they may improve the sound output on the DVD version and seeing as the Wii looks like it could be good for the internet, viewing photos via SD, getting news and weather, why not add DVD? I won't miss it not having DVD, but if it's there I wouldn't mind. I could dump another electronic item from my bedroom then!

No point in the "Wii" having a DVD player in store for us. We have DVD players to watch DVD's. The "Wii" needs to focus more on the console than on DVD's!

And we have PCs for the weather and the websurfing and the photo editing and the old skool emulation. Nice, my kids can have a PC, DVD player and Wii in their bedroom... not.
Ive not seen Nintendo focus on DVD playback at all TBO, the console uses DVDs for games, and is more than powerful enough to do playback via software, its a matter of enabling it, I dont expect many people on these forums to "see the point" but parents will.
