Wii faces Class Action Lawsuit

The wrist strap shouldn't be required, you are not supposed to let go of the controller.
Too many stupid people are being allowed to breed.

haha!

breaks even when used as directed

it'd be IMPOSSIBLE to break that thing if you were using as directed. you wouldn't even NEED the strap if you were using it properly. simple as.

edit: oops...funny echo in here

Having never seen a wii in action but just in tv ads I assume that you hold on tight and the strap is just supposed to be a backup in case you let go and hit you mum in the face with the wi controller?

I don't think people are intentionally letting for of it to be fair. It is there as a safety precaution like so many other things.

If it is there it should work and take the load it is required to take, simple.

Someone pointed out to me quiet how silly this is. If Nintendo hadn't bothered to supply the strap and you chucked your controller at your 1000 year old vase then you wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Because Nintendo thought 'some of our customers are muppets' and included a strap, they're now being sued over it.... incredible

fini

Nintendo are already addressing the strap issue, they have announced a product recall. IMO they have done everything nessisary. As stated the console is not being uses correctly if you are throwing the controller around the room

However I think the strap should have been made strong enough to restrain a charging Bull Elephant because you just cant plan for stupidity

What I don't get is that the straps are pretty sturdy anyway, so even if you did let go of it once accidentally, it wouldn't be enough to break the strap. These people must have been consistently letting go of the Wiimotes to have weakened it sufficiently to break.

Like Virii says, they shouldn't be allowed to breed really.

It is strong enough. I tell ya what when I get my replacement straps I will get them set up on the tensile tester at work and get the breakage figures for each strap. Get just a 6inch length of just 4lb breaking strain fishing line in your hand and try to snap that with a jerk.

The wii cord will be higher than that. Attach a weight about the same as a wii controller and go nuts see if you can break the cord.

I'm gonna sue microsoft for not putting a cord on the 360 wireless controller. Fifa 06 caused me to throw the damn thing and guess what it broke. I didnt expect that to happen.

I agree nintendo's mistake was putting a cord on there in the first place.

5 year olds with muscles like Arnie's triceps, apparently, if they can throw the Wiimote hard enough to break the strap if they let go of it.

I have seen a picture of a wiimote physically stuck in the plastic surround of a television.
I don't think any judge in the world would consider that people should be expected to be using that much force when using the wii.

However America did allow a lawsuit in favour of someone who went into the back of his Winnebago to make a cup of tea whilst it was moving.
It crashed and his defence was "but I had cruise control on and I assumed it would drive itself........"

If you launch your wiimote with enough force to break the wrist strap then you're a numpty and should be locked in a padded cell for your own good incase you hurt yourself.....

Not really a 5 year old taking a swing like a baseball bat will be able to throw a hunk of plastic quite far.

Also can i have a wee poll here. See the people who say you don't need them, how many actually have them attached to their Wiimotes?

It's attached, just on the off chance it happens to slip out of my hand, which it never has after many hours of play.

But surely it's not about how far you throw it, but the force with which it is thrown...? The straps are pretty strong, so I'm struggling to see how a small child (or even some adults) could throw it sufficiently hard to physically snap the strap.

My 9 year old does karate, so has a pretty mean throw... it'll be interesting to see if he does break it when he's allowed to play with it, but frankly I don't anticipate any problems.

However, we'll always be wearing the strap when playing. I think they are necessary in case our son or anyone else does accidentally loosen their grip, because I don't want to have it bouncing off the wall - although it does look solidly built, I should add.
