Seeing how cheap Wiis are getting these days I'm thinking I could get one but I'm not sure if there is any point as I'm not really into Mario (but haven't played the Galaxy games). What great exclusives (or very different from the PS360 versions) games are there on the Wii?

Before you all say various Zeldas, I haven't ever played a Zelda game so that is part of the reason for wanting a Wii (with GC backwards compatibility)!

How many different versions of the Wii ar there- do they all have GameCube compatibility except for that new non WiFi one?

There are in effect two versions of the "normal" Wii with a few unique models thrown in as well.

Generally speaking the original (white launch model) Wii has GC compatability, whilst the later revision - looked the same but lacks the GC ports on the top - doesn't. I am not sure when this changed but no doubt the information is out there.

To ensure the Wii has GC backwards compatability all you need to do is ensure it has the flaps on the top for the GC controller ports / memory cards.

The latest Wii Mini is a complete waste of time.

Ah right ok... Do Wiis Generally break? Are early Wiis known for poor reliability or anything?

Honestly I have no idea although the used one I picked up around a year ago shows no signs of anything being wrong with it. They can be had for around £40 boxed so it isn't a massive outlay if you needed another one.

Well I bought one! £40. Well, £80 once another remote, nunchuck and a couple of games had been purchased. I had no idea what games to get so i picked up random ones that were under a tenner, that I didn't recognise as ports of 360 games.

My girlfriend wanted Pikman, so gamecube controllers and memory card are first on her list. Component cable is first on my list :D

We've had ours since 2008 and it's still in regular use, it hasn't missed a beat. The balance board is a bit dodgy though, the batteries break contact if we're a bit rough with it.

Oh, and Wii Fit Plus, Sports Resort, Raving Rabbids get most use.

I had one for a short while along with a DS, say what you like about Nintendo, but you have to hand it to them that they build solid pieces of kit that doesn't tend to break or cause problems

There is a Wii version of pikmin, so getting a non 'cube compatible Wii wouldn't have been a problem (unless you wanted any other games that are only available on the GC).

As for my suggestion...

Muramasa: The Demon Blade (really good hack 'n' slash platformer that has a lot of re-playability).

Metroid Trilogy - up there with Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 as the greatest games on the Wii

Sin and Punishment 2
Xenoblade
Zelda:Wind Waker
and just to add something different that your gf will likely like, Kororinpa. A little gem of a game.

Oh, Little King's Story - one of the best and least appreciated games on the Wii. Better imo than the Pikmin games and good enough to be Nintendo first party.

You may as well get the original GC Super Mokey Ball too - it's superb! (all the sequels are trash)

Okami is pretty good apparently. From what I read it is pretty much Zelda but with a wolf instead of Link :p
