I borrowed a wii this weekend thinking that if i enjoyed it i'd try to source one for myself

anyway its kinda cool i guess altho the games ive borrowed aint really my kinda thing i really want to try zelda and resident evil, anyway im playing on a samsung 37"BDX LCD TV and i gotta say the graphics are poor, i knew they wouldnt be as good as my 360 but seriously i expected a little better

the main problem seems to be the jaggys on the games like its in some dire need of anti aliasing and i played a game called GT pro series and the graphics are awefull, same with tiger woods 2007

so im asking is this indicative of the wii or does my tv need setting up for the wii properly ?

It's the Wii, I was shocked at the sheer poor quality as well, let down indeed. I was also hoping that the "new" control system would make up for it, but alas, fail.

Had a few mates round on Wii Sports, which was fun for an hour or so, they all commented on the quality.

I played a Wii around a mates house on her 42" plasma. It looked better than I expected, but I couldn't help but think 'this would be so much prettier on my 360'. Still, if you can accept the graphics quality, there is plenty of fun to be had on the Wii.

Really does go to show how much of a graphics whore I have become :D

If you don't have component cables for the Wii then you can't exactly complain about the jaggies. When the Wii is running at 480p in progressive scan this removes the jaggies with a clearer, sharper image. A good LCD TV also makes a difference in quality. Super Mario Galaxy on my Panasonic 26" TX-26LXD70 looks fantastic.

Im playing with the standard leads provided with the wii, which will be composite ? would buying Component leads make any difference ? you dont really notice the poor graphics on titles like wii sports because they are cartoony but it becomes very evident when you put in a normal game, can anyone tell me what graphics are like on the zelda and res evil ?

its a tiny bit less powerful then the first xbox its resolution max's out at 480p/576i and its graphics aren't capable of AA, which is ok for a moderate sized tv but when you try and stretch it out onto a 37 screen its never going to look good.

res comparison.

not helped by so many of the wii's game's at the moment being horrid shovelware, the ps2 had the same issues but in the end various dev's got some stunning graphics out of it. still there simply isnt enough output to fill a large screen.

Look at mario galaxy and Metroid Prime. They're very nice looking games (especially prime) but most developers are lazy.

Still fantastic to play though isn't it :D

Graphics are bad and especially noticeable when moving from a game like COD4 onto Mario Galaxy. But that said, I'll reiterate my first line. Its still fantastic to play!

if a games good enough you wont notice the graphics so why worry about it when playing such great titles at mario galaxy, metroid prime, zelda etc.

zelda on component cables is nice, its ropey in places but in others its draw dropping good plus the level design is sublime, as is metroid prime. this is on samsung 32"lcd 480p

Dont expect much mate if you are playing a console that outputs 480i and trying to get it at 1080p, it will just look sheer crap. It is not a hardcore gaming machine its just a casual console.

Developers are not really taking it to its full potential. Games like Party quiz coming out is just degrading it. Developers really need to come up with something special as their is litterally so much potential their for gameplay.

If you wanted great graphics, go and get or play your 360. you should have knew about the Wii's capabilities before you bought it.

.

What's hardcore gaming?

The Wii is great. Gets played here far more than the Xbox 360. Who cares if it isn't 1080 or whatever. I don't notice the "bad graphics" as I am far too busy immersed in the gameplay.

Super Mario Galaxy looks sublime however.

Much depends on the screen. I play 360/ps3 games on an HD display, but the Wii on a 32" crt, and it looks fine. Moments in MP3 and Galaxy have floored me they've looked so nice. When output to 1080p on my projector it looks awful.

The Wii will never look good on a large plasma or lcd panel.

I run our wii on a small-ish Samsung widescreen LCD via component and it looks great - Zelda looks absolutely gorgeous. I think anybody using a Nintendo (of any kind) purely for eye candy needs their head looking at - Nintendo have never been about that.

As for it not supporting higher resolutions - the percentage of people with displays capable of higher than 480p is tiny. I bet you'll find that, worldwide, the majority of consoles are still hooked up to ropey old 4:3 CRT displays with equally ropey old composite cables. I'd rather they kept it simple and kept the cost down.

getting one for the missus for Christmas, how will it look using whatever comes with it on an non wide SDTV? I have no idea what cables it comes with :p
