Sorry if this is a repeat thread, but search came up with nothing. Apparently according to Eurogamer, the Wii HD will be announced tomorrow and is to be the first of the next generation of consoles. It'll be slated for 2011.

Nintendo may be planning to unveil new Wii hardware at the press conference it's holding tomorrow.

The model, dubbed Wii HD, has been shown to numerous developers and publishers already, according to What They Play.

We're told this will be a true successor to the Wii in a similar way that Game Boy Advance was to the Game Boy, and Nintendo apparently has a 2011 release slated for the high-definition console.

Aside from HD visuals, the report suggests there will be a greater emphasis on backwards compatibility and digital distribution, plus a large storage solution.

We're also told Nintendo has beefed up internal hardware research by nearly 300 per cent since the Wii was released in 2006.

Nintendo is expected to unveil a new DS at the conference tomorrow, too. This is said to contain a music player and a camera.

This is all just rumour for now, of course. Still - should be interesting, this conference.

Seems to me that if true, Nintendo are seeing what people like about the current generation and are filling in the blanks. I hope this is true, as we need Nintendo to keep focusing on what they do best to an extent that it makes the other big two companies (Sony and MS) realize they can't take them on this time and they won't be able to take them on next time - as so to stick to their own forte of games. Personally, the idea of a HD Wii with all the good things of the other consoles sounds like a sure fire winner to me and is sure to pull in a lot of gamers disenfranchised with the current Wii, which lacked many features we take for granted, such as HDD storage, streamlined online interfaces, account-wide games (as opposed to system-wide) and last but not least, high definition.

why the hell would they announce this if it isnt due for another 3 years. morons, way to kill sales. "ill just wait for the wiiHD i think. maybe buy a 360 for fifthy quid cheaper in the mean time".

thats genius, that is.

Most of their market are housewives and toddlers, I don't think it's a big deal.

Well why the hell would anybody buy a novelty system that only has the odd decent game released, most of which require purchasing a brand new expensive novelty controller?
I can't think of a reason, yet millions still got sold!

A vast chunk of the Wii userbase is people who aren't remotely savvy to the games industry, so seeing the 'next gen' of Wii will only ellicit a response of; "Oooooh look, the future!". Then they'll go back to sitting on their pearly white sofas in their pastel shaded rooms playing games with their 2.4 children and investing £100 in a new controller for a game they'll only play for 2 weeks.

you dont need to remind me how many consoles they've sold. but >this< wont help them.

what they need to do is work on getting some decent games for the wii thats out now, not tell us whats coming in 3 years time.

Because they were clever and discovered that there is more of a gaming market than what was traditionally aimed at?

To you it's a novelty, to small children etc it's great. Just because it does not make it fit to hardcore gamers does it mean it's any less of a console.

They're cleverer than you can possibly imagine, I work in procurement and am currently studying supply chains and marketing.
From a professional perspective, what they've achieved is astonishing, from marketing to manufacturing, they've taken the accidental market they found with the DS and aggressively targeted it with the Wii.
The whole thing is genius, selling to a completely untapped market is the marketing equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel.
I have the utmost respect for them in that sense, but it doesn't make the Wii any less of a novelty in my eyes.

You have to love online journalist they will put up any old crap, there is no way that nintendo will show off a new home console tomorrow.
