Nintendo announced some features of the Wii Messageboard yesterday...

Play History

  • Data collection function that cannot be cleared
  • Compiles a listing of information that includes total time played in every game. Could also track other stats
  • Also functions as a parental monitoring system
  • Will be used by Nintendo to track player data such as "most popular game played"
Message Board

  • Keeps user achievement data (!) and shares it with other users of that console
  • Integrates with games to notify players of important events
  • Date sorting and calendar functions
  • When connected to the internet, may be used to communicate with other consoles much like a simplified email client
  • Compatible with mobile phones

Can't see it been a XBL killer, but is yet another move in the right direction.

Wonder what the stats would be like? Number of waggled with the Wiimote? People smashed accidentally in the face with nunchuk?

And what's with the mobile phone compatibility!!

Sounds decent.

So it says it's compatible with mobile phones, does that mean you can send texts with it?

I'm pretty sure that you could send texts on it, aye. Saw that a little while ago. Likely to cost Nintendo points though.

Hybrids

Online 'currency' that you buy with real money and then use them to buy stuff like games etc. Same thing as Microsoft points on the 360.

The points system is a good idea, and it helps to keep things regulated across territories.

This surprised me:
Opera to be free for the Wii until July 2007
The Opera team, who made headway in the mobile market a few months ago when they released Opera Mobile, will be launching a version of Opera for the Wii. That was announced earlier this year, but many were dismayed that despite Opera being free for desktops, it would be a pay product for the Wii. Now we learn that, at least for a while, Opera will be free on the Wii, as a promotion. Until July of next year, Opera will be available for no charge. After that, it'll be purchasable through the Wii points system. That gives you over 8 months after the console's launch, which makes one think that Opera probably won't be getting much in terms of sales generated here. Regardless, I am interested to see what browsing on the Wii will be like.

Replace 'Nintendo' with 'Sony' and this would be a flame-fest by now...virtually a carbon copy of Live!

Even so, MS got it right so there's no reason for other companies not to follow.

For anything that Nintendo does, a kitten is born.

For anything that Sony does, a kitten is shot.

Both fact.

I thought it was eaten... we'll, it is Asia.
Microsoft - Saving one kitten at a time.

Agreed.

The only thing Nintendo have on their side is they created a few more original ideas his generation than Sony.

MS on the other hand, basically everyone has to copy their online system, because otherwise other companies would not have a prayer in hell against them for online play.

Oooooo, some more screenies have popped up:

AND!!!!!!!!!

I'm hearing a lot of talk, as yet not confirmed but from good sources of news sites, that the Wii has a 'kinda' achievements thing for your Mii's. Yeah this was confirmed a while ago, but more details are creeping through.

Basically, each game you complete (or do something special a-la-Xbox360 games), your Mii will receive something like a hat, glasses, accessories. For example there's a strong rumour that completing Red Steel will award your Mii with a Katana!!!!

Bring it on!!!

That mii achievement system sounds really cool :p actually unlocking stuff for another aspect of the console. Instead of just adding points to your gamer card..
(please don't flame me for saying that as i do have a 360 to :)...

Also i read that with the browser you will be able to zoom in and out on parts of the site by drawing a circle, square around the bit you wont and then pull back and forward on the wiimote to zoom in and out :D

i also read that a HDD attachment could be in the pipeline so i wonder how free the web browsing will be and weather you will be able to download what ever you wont onto the HDD ie music and video files mmmmmm

XD-3

edit: Also am i right in thinking that the way the mii's will work is like a massive open chat room of mii's so you could click on another mii and start a convo and like swap stuff like on messenger? yet another mmmmmm
