Hello there !!

Long story short.
I've just come by a cheap wireless router and set it up but my DS doesn't like it.
Now the router has 3 free LAN ports on the back and its sat pretty close to where the Wii will be.
Can the Wii connect to it this way (with wires) if wireless doesn't work ?

No.

But you can by a Wii USB Wi-Fi adaptor for your PC

There will be a USB to Ethernet adaptor available for the Wii, which will plug into one of the rear USB ports on the Wii to let it connect by a normal ethernet cable to a router etc if you aren't using wifi.

(The Wii should be less fussy with wifi than the DS, and will also support WPA and WPA encryption.)

That's the thing I was thinking of.
Would that USB attachment not go into one of the LAN slots at all ?
I was sure it...er.... might.

Where have you heard that the Wii will support WPA as well as WEP?
I've heard it will be just like the DS in that it only supports WEP.

There will be a USB ethernet adaptor available. Not sure when though. Send an email off to Nintendo. if they won't be making one soon i am sure a 3rd party will come out with one.

It's all in the options in the Wifi setup on the Wii - which are plain to see and explained on umpteen videos and still shots of the Wii that have appeared online on gaming sites etc over the last few weeks.

There's a few links in some of the older Wii threads...

Well I've just fired off a question to Nintendo technical support.
I'll let you know what I find out :)

(The USB ethernet adapter MUST go into a LAN socket ....surely..... )

No...

The news there was on it, showed it plugged into the USB on the Wii and gave you a LAN Socket... So you would then use a standard ethernet cable to link that LAN socket with a socket on the router, that way you could use whatever length of cable you required.

Ok, it might not DIRECTLY go into the LAN on the router but it does eventually.
See awsome diagram...

Ahh awesome. So if i got one i could WPA it to my router and then what? Would the DS be able to access the internet through the Wii using WEP? Can it do both simultaneously?

MoonPie, that is correct. I just meant to ask Nintendo when they were planning on releasing it as i have not seen any info regarding a release date. It is a USB ethernet adaptor so it will certainly allow you to connect to a router as that is the whole idea :)
