From this week's Escapist, an article that I don't agree with - the Wii's control scheme makes violent games 'more sinister'? The ESRB should take control schemes into account? Violence via Wii-mote is more damaging than violence via PS3 controller?

Replace a gun with a hammer or a sword, and the actions the player must use to control the onscreen action are even more tangibly violent in nature. Suddenly, the Wii's propensity to make players more animated takes on a much more sinister connotation.

I'm a little tired of the 'Oh, but it's OK for stable people to play this way, BUT' argument - frankly, the world is full of crazy people and if we ran around in fear of what ideas some whackjob might get into their head, we'd be in hysterics over lots of stuff indeed. The author is right, and the industry needs to be cognizant of critics (and some criticisms do indeed have value). But there are a number of pundits who could find connections between games and violent real world acts even if we were only playing Tetris and Katamari (the plaintive mooing of cows as I rolled them up really made me want to go slaughter some animals, let me tell you).

I'm sure someone will hop right on doing a study regarding virtual violence of the Wii type, but until then, it seems indictments of Nintendo's plans and labeling the Wii-mote a vehicle for potentially sinister acts is jumping the gun just a wii bit.

I hope our old friend Jack Thompson doesnt think the same or who knows what he'll say about it!!
Wonder how long before playing games on Wii leads to trained assassins! :D

See this is the real reason why Nintendo didn't go with ultra realistic next gen graphics. Its not because they couldn't its because they didn't want to see news headlines like 'mass murderer got lust for killing after playing Nintendo Wii slash game with uber realistic graphics. It was like I was cuttin the throat of a real person killer admits!!!!!!!'

Nintendo are so responsible.

We've just got to admit that video games are just one big hooligan/terrorist/pshycopath training tool and you're just plain wrong in the head if you like them.

I'm still waiting for the media to blame Bomberman, especially the ten player Sega Saturn version for the hugh rise in terrorist attacks in Iraq since its release in 1985.

Why not a 360 pad?

:D

Jack Thomason is going to have a field day when Manhunt 2 comes out on the Wii. I must admit though that whilst I love violent video games just as much as the next man, I do think that using the Wiimote to actually beat someone to death or slit someone throat is going a bit tooo far IMO.

Are you for real? Kilogram for kilogram, the 360 weighs more :p

wouldnt know about controls not used the new ps3 control, if your hitting someone with the box an elephant would do less damage than the 360 although the Ps3 looks fairly massive itself

The PS3 is bigger and heavier, which is amusing given the stink the PS2 fangirls made about the XBox 1's size and weight. :)

Yes i totally agree, games make normal people violent, and violent people more violent. Infact, it's not just games, it's movies and rap music too, and to add to that, even art encites violence to the highest degree.

Let's just all sit in an enclosed city, destroy everything that even hints a slight emotional reaction, take dailey chill pills and employ grammaton clerics of the tetragram.

Sorry, i just couldn't resist. ')

But anyway, strangling someone with the wiimote and have it vibrate with your victim's every struggle is strangely appealing and quite hilarious immersion. I think i should be locked up.
