Hey all,

My 8 year old currently has an xbox 360 which he enjoys but there really is quite a lack of games that are suitable for his age. He plays all the lego games, minecraft, a few other star wars games, sonic racing and some platformers.

I'm tempted to buy him a Wii U for christmas as a lot of the games seem more catered for his age.

I know very little about the console really, do you regret your purchase or is it a worthy investment?

I don't have one yet (waiting for smash bros) their aren't many 3rd party games but almost all the Nintendo games would be great for 8 year old. A great feature is backward complatlibity so you can pick up great wii get like super mario sunshine, zelda etc.

I'm not a huge Nintendo fan but I do own a Wii U, as you say I think for his age the games may be better suited.

It has the Lego games you say he likes but beyond that it is really down to Nintendo titles as it hasn't had the sales to attract much third party attention. If you can accept that then it isn't an issue as from my experience so far they seem well made and fun to play and I'd imagine the cartoon like characters, bright colours etc would all appeal to an 8 year old much the way the Lego games do. I'd imagine Mario Kart 8 with the Racing Wheel (steering wheel like motion control) would be just about perfect.

As ak22 mentioned you'd also have Wii games to choose from due to the backwards compatibility, there are also some older titles available through the e-shop.

If its for a Christmas present then you could do well to wait until Black Friday (28th Nov) and see if any good deals come up, will also give you a couple of weeks to looks at videos and investigate it.

It's my most used console for the past 10 years without a doubt, it really has made me fall back in love with gaming.

It's splendid, best gaming purchase I've made in a long long time.

You can pick them up for £150 now. Be sure to check out Lego City Undercover.. its the best, funniest Lego game ever released in my opinion.
Mario kart 8 is a must along with Rayman Legends and 3d Worlds and you also have Captain Toad and Yoshi's Woolley World coming out in the near future too.

I have a Wii U for my boys 8th birthday in about a week:) Now he is wanting Skylanders for xmas. Boy is skylanders are expensive its like crack for kids.

Got a Wii U for my 8 year old's Christmas present but that skylander series I'm keeping well away from! Did look at it but the costs look horrendous.

He has made an xmas list starting with the Skylander Team Trap and then goes on to name every Team Trap Skylander character. If I was to buy the lot it probably be over £200.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, looks like I'm getting him one :)

I see that you can get the basic console for £150, it's just smaller storage right? You also don't get a balance sensor, is that needed? I've read you can use external storage if need be which seems to work well.

I'm just wondering if I should go for the premium console or is a rip off?

Edit: I have a wii so I have a few controllers from that. The wii u only comes with 1 of it's fancy gamepads with the screen, should I buy another or is it not necessary?

I dont use mine a lot but thats because i have to many other things to play at the moment! Im looking forward to buying some of nintendos exclusives and playing through them when things get quiet!

I did buy bayonetta 2 (i wouldnt recommend it for kids ;) ) but not played it much yet

Mario kart 8 is amazing though and i bet a family would get a lot of use out of that alone to justify the console purchase :)

You will be fine with the white basic 8gb.If you want to download lots of games/dlc from the eShop in the future just add a USB stick.
The balance sensor bar is only really needed to play Original Wii games on it.
All the older Wii controllers will work with Wii U & there is a massive back catalogue of great Wii games.

Thanks for all the help, I'll get hold of a basic one then with mario kart 8, mario world 3d and lego city undercover. Fingers crossed amazon have it on on sale for black friday :)
