Hey OcUK Forums.

I am thinking of getting my 7 year old a Wii U for Christmas. I want to get some feedback on how fun it is and would he likely enjoy it.

Of course the NX is around the corner so this is not being bought as an investment.

Would you go for this or a 3DS XL ?

The Wii U is worst console I have ever owned, it may be OK for a 7 year old I guess as it's kids friendly with the handful of Mario games.

I'd go for the 3DS XL unless you want it to be a family thing.. better selection of games and it will keep them occupied on car journey etc.

I disagree. It is a good console with decent offering of games. Just the worst marketing in history.

Although it now makes it a bargain of a console.

Sod the control pad though. Would a 7 year old be able to hold it?

I'd say it's worth buying for a 7 year old. It has some decent games for adults too. You should be able to get one for pretty cheap.

I gave my PS4 away and kept my Wii U. I don't play it so much now, as too busy with other life stuff. But it is one of the best consoles I've owned, reminds me of the N64 days. Game quality > Quantity.

Wii U has some fantastic games available so definitely worthwhile if you can get a good deal leading up to Christmas.

Only downside are that despite it being at end of life the games are mostly still full RRP, and it can get expensive very quickly if you want to start adding on the additional controller accessories to get the most out of the local multiplayer.

I'd echo the majority of the above, the Wii U is a good console, and they can also play it off screen so dont need to tie up the TV which is a bonus.

My only complaint about the Wii U really is the battery on the controller isn't great, but I guess your boy wont be allowed big long gaming sessions without breaks anyway.

My kids love it and they're 6 & 8, no problems holding the controller whatsoever.

Purposely bought games they can play together, Splatoon, Mario 3d, Mario Kart

Some amazing games you won't get anywhere else, worth it just for Mario Kart 8 and Mario 3D World alone, they've just added some additional games to the Select range which you can pick up for £16.99 each including Mario, Toad Treasure Tracker and Donkey Kong.

My 5 year old can't play any other games but is now a whiz at Super Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U using the main controller and loves our family gaming sessions so thumbs up from me.

Sums it up. I've been using my WiiU day 1 for exclusives like Monster Hunter and Zelda. Whereas my PS4 sat around in the original packaging almost a year before I started using/playing games on it. Of course, right now I'm only playing the PS4 and not even touching the WiiU, but that's cos Ratchet and Clank is a fun-to-play modern day Mario Galaxy-like game (at least for me).

A WiiU is suitable for all ages, especially if one loves couch multiplayer and great exclusives. I hate the gamepad, but almost every game I have has the option to not use it as the primary controller (in fact, Pikmin 3 plays best with the Wiimote and nunchuk). Games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros have a plethora of options when it comes to controls. I almost always use the WiiU Pro controller, sometimes bundled in with a Black WiiU or sold seperately (mine was included with the console).
