Wii U

Has anyone read this:

Nintendo's E3 2011 keynote yesterday gave the world its first official look at the all-new Wii U hardware plus (we thought) a glimpse at the graphical capabilities of its next console. As it turns out, the impressive list of upcoming games for the 2012-bound console was just that, a list, with the visuals we saw on screen coming from PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of said titles. Nintendo of America chief Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that to be the case in an interview with GameTrailers, where he also points out that the eventual Wii U games will look at least as good as their PS3 / 360 counterparts. Which is why, in his eyes, it's okay to show us those games being played on the competition's (current-gen) hardware. He does remind us that the Wii U will be delivering graphics at a 1080p resolution, and points to the garden tech demo that also graced E3 as an indicator of what can be done with Nintendo's next console. That's all well and good, but maybe tell us in advance next time, Reggie?

So is the Wii U going to render the same Xbox 360/PS3 games at 1080p internally? Or just using scaling as the others do?

Yeah it's already been posted a few times before, but honestly, it doesn't really matter if most of the third-party game footage is from the PS3/360 versions since they are multi-platform games anyway.

The thing you really want to look out for is the exclusive games developed only on the Wii-U, which unfortunately there wasn't anything.

I'm assuming the one controller thing is because it won't be able to stream to 2 or more at once? I wonder what res the controller is and whether the framerate will be smooth enough to play complicated titles on it.

Lego city stories is exclusive which we are working on.

is this the next gen dreamcast? anyway i dont think having a screen on a controller will ever work (there is too much going on the big screen anyway!), it look awful to hold let alone game on it. this is where dreamcast might have failed, but the legend lives on.

the controllers looks to be super expensive. i thought the wii was marketed as a cost friendly thing.

Yeah I guess the PS3 is totally doing the wrong thing then.

but it doesn't play ps2 games. :p

I always find it funny when people complain that an new console doesn't play older games. I understand not wanting to have 2-3 consoles under your tv, but you buy a new console to play newer games. The Wii plays game cube games, just get your fill there.

I don't think I've played a single GC game on my Wii. In all honesty, I think I'd just get the Gamecube out and play on that anyway.

One thing I do hope Nintendo sort is the Virtual Console - I'm praying they allow you to re-download games you had on the Wii onto the Wii U.

djkav - good post, I think/hope Devs are excited by this.

Don’t understand this either, BC is ok for the first 1 year of a new consoles release but after that there isn’t any point. The demand will drop after a while.

360 - Xbox 1 support dropped after 2 years.
PS3 - PS2 support dropped after revision models.
GBA Micro - Support for original gameboy games dropped.
DS - GBA support dropped with the DSi

I noticed that the full specs for the Wii U hasn’t been detailed, only the basic. So I take it Nintendo are deciding what custom AMD graphic chip they will use. For what we need know AMD could be building a graphic based on next gen PC style graphics, which will be truly next gen for the Wii U and the graphic could completely change over the next 12 months compared to what we saw demo’ed at this years E3.
