Wii VC - game resolutions?

I downloaded my first VC game yesterday, Sonic, and went to play it but the tv just looses the Wii's signal.
I'm currently playing my UK Wii, through the official component cable on a US HDTV.
If you play a VC game does it change the display settings? I'm guessing it goes to the settings of the original game, which means UK Pal settings.

Am I right? or is there another explination?

UK VC games are 576i @ 50hz.
