Right bit of a strange on, one of my friends wants to surf the net when they're staying at the grandparents house, they're going to pay for a wireless broadband connection as there is none there at the moment. Its not a very big house, so I think a full size PC is out of the question. I was wondering if the Wii browser is any good? also I know you have to pay for it but how much is it? Thought this might be a bit cheaper than a laptop and also they can play games with it. They also have a DS and i heard there is a browser on that too, so same question as the Wii ie price and is it any good?

Edit they would also like to use messenger so would the www.ILoveIM.com website work?

Wii browser is ok, but I really wouldn't fancy it as my main point for net access. Not sure how it would handle messaging or more complicated sites that needed plugins etc.

It's a bit too clunky for using it for regular web browsing, think you would get a bit fed up after a while with all the scrolling and zooming about.

I certianly wouldnt recommend anyone to use the Wii browser, its ok for a gimmick but for actual web browsing I find it unusable.

Unless they have a fantastically large TV, he's going to spend all his browsing time zoomed in, scrolling left to right and down constantly to read anything.

Also, I'd be sceptical how well messenger sites work, since you're basically restricted to one window with as many tabs as you want. Thus, you can't have the small window on the side the web IM services use.

I think a cheapo laptop would just be a better idea.

Yep, not really that suitable for "everyday" sites... works OK for Wii-optimised sites, and Nintendo's own weather and news channels, but for "normal" sites it's far too clunky to use for anything longer than a few minutes.

Also, the version of Flash isn't the latest (iirc) so chances of getting things like IM working on it are gonna be pretty slim, imo.

Great for playing games on, not so great for surfing the web on.
