Hi, ive pre-ordered a wii and have been waiting on some news of the the wii rj-45 adapter but so far haeheard no news that it will be out on launch and since i only have a wired netgear router i have been looking at alternatives.

Nintendo have stated that their USB Wifi adapater for the DS will work for the Wii. So i was wondering, especially those of you with a DS; will any usb wireless adapater work? Like those here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Wireless_PCI_Adapters.html
or does only nintendo's own one work? (which is more expensive than third party ones?)

I would be surprised if the Ethernet adaptor isn't available at launch.

You could just buy a wireless router, it probably wouldn't be that much more expensive.

Anyone know if the Wii will be WPA compatible?

And to answer the OP, there is an alternative to the official adapter called the 'WiFi Max' which claims to do the same thing.

IIRC it is both WPA and WEP. There's a video called "Wii Interface" doing the rounds on YouTube, or look for the thread that fieldly started called call something like "Wii details" or something (last post was yesterday IIRC), I've posted a link to the youtube video and that shows 4 authentication options on the Wii interface.

In one of the videos looking in depth at the Wii Channels and setup menus (linked to in a post here yesterday) the internet connection setup showed options for selecting for WEP, WPA and WPA2...

Edit: Just beaten to it by the post above :)

Pretty sure the 360 supports WPA.

Yup some googling seems to confirm that however it has made me rethink my whole wireless network scenario.

I use WEP and it is because the gaming adapter for my old Xbox doesn't handle WPA.
Infact I can't seem to find a gaming adapter or wireless access point that does handle WPA which means that the rest of the devices on the network are stuck with WEP.

Looking around OCUK now stock a range of networking over the powerlines equipment which solves all wireless related problems but may bring some of its own.

So what to do? Stick with WEP, find a WPA compatible access point or go for the network over powerline options. Has anyone got any expereine of network over powerline stuff?
