At the moment I have a sky hub - About 5 wireless devices and 4 ethernet devices connected to it - Some times the internet will just go really slow and the router will have to be reset - Will a better router make a difference and would it also increase the connection speed - not on fibre just a standard connection

Depends what the problem is, do you see the slow down on both wired and wireless devices?

A quick Google suggests the Sky hub is only single band 2.4Ghz wireless which will likely mean you are fighting with all your neighbours for wireless air time, so if your problems are wireless only then getting a 5Ghz capable AP/router may help.

If not it's hard to say whether it will help or not as there could be various explanations as to what is going on

I was with Sky once, the Sky hub router is terrible. I had about 5 devices connected and it would just ground to a halt.

Get another router, the problem you may have is that you will need to extract the Username and Password for a new hub.

If that's a shared house (quite a few wired systems if not) have an ask around. If you have a housemate who is using torrents (even legal ones to be clear) the number of connections these make can rather saturate the basic/free routers cache.

I can do it with 2 machines, if the wife goes looking for torrents, even if there's little download going on, the connections made/etc can happily tie the router up in knots and cause slow/timeouts etc on my machine.

there is a way of doing this i tried it but router was not playing ball, a bit of googling and you will find the software needed, im not sure if im allowed to link it here ???

I've had very few issues with the Sky Hub, which is a shame as i'd happily drop an AC68u in, but i've no reason to do so. The password extraction process isn't really difficult to find online, but technically installing a 3rd party router is a violation of Sky's TOS.

How hard would a new router be to configure - Would it just be a case of putting in the sky username and password

I've just done this tonight, swapped out the black Sky SR02 modem/router for a Huawei HG612 Modem & an Asus RT-N66U Router, much happier (though still early days).

Have 3 wired devices & 2 wireless (now on the 5GHz bandwidth).

I used wireshark to extract the login details, took about 2 mins once I watched a YT video, and easy to setup the router, glad I did it :)

It's changed for DSL services recently. All it says now is that we cannot guarantee a third party router will work and we won't supply any info unless you're on the Pro package.
