Will a Corsair HX520w run this system...

I've moved from a Q6600 system to an i5 system and i'm having major problems identifying why my system freezes on 'Windows Starting' when I use a high spec graphics card. It runs fine on low spec ones like the ATI HD2350 but freezes/crashes every time when I try a GTX260 or HD4870.

Antec's power supply calculator says I only need 392w, and i'm using a Corsair HX520w that ran the GTX260 no problem on my Q6600 system.

Any ideas?

(I've tried numerous reinstalls of W7x64 and all drivers)

PSU should be perfectly fine. Sounds like a driver issue. Have you tested RAM on memtest? When exactly are you getting system freezes and crashes? Tried flashing to the latest motherboard BIOS?

Is there nothing in the event viewer that might highlight a cause?

Anyway, I would only expect it to freeze due to insufficient power when stressing the card, starting windows certainly isn't.

Does sound like a driver issue. Is this a fresh install?

Yes i've ran memtest and there are no problems.

The freeze comes up just before the windows login screen should appear. It happened on the stock BIOS and and the latest BIOS.

What is so confusing is that the problem only appears with higher spec graphics cards.

I've always suspected a driver issue too but can't nail down what driver it is and why.

The critical events in Event viewer all just state event 41 (kernal power), so not much help. There's nothing else I can see that helps me.

I've tried 3 clean installs of Windows.

I'd have a look at your bios settings for CPU and Ram voltage when the bigger cards are installed.

The only similar issue I've had to you was due to ram voltage being very slightly too low on startup. This never, ever affected normal operation but caused the occasional hang like the one you describe. Took me ages to sort it out and was resolved by slightly overvolting the memory controller.

I've already tried that when I was ruling out it being a RAM issue.

Guess i'll have to RMA the board.

I use a HX520w to power the rig in my sig, so can't see why it wouldnt power yours

Although I have literally just sold it in Member's Market as i've upgraded so I can put another gfx card in and crossfire them
