Hello,

Since I may end up (sooner or later) getting a DX10 Card, I wondered if Vista can be installed over Windows XP - without having to format my whole computer HD? Also, do you *need* VISTA to play DX10 games on DX10 Cards?. Also, lets suppose some people don't want to upgrade to VISTA - and have a Nvidia 8800GTX, wel "DX10" won't work on WIN XP will it - I understand?

TIA

Yeah you can do an upgrade install to go from XP to Vista. But it takes about three times as long as a clean install.

upgrading is more hassle than it's worth. i always recomnmend a clean install for every windows version or service pack. i still remember all those "xp sp2 ****** up my pc" threads even now. :D

Thanks.

Don't mind upgrading to Vista - so long as I don't leave any rough edges behind :eek: - will it just delete WinXP operating system? or re-associate files etc - not sure....

Be best of keeping a copy of XP on there as well, nothings gona work in Vista so your gona have to keep going back to XP for all your games etc... that won't work in it, gona be a nightmare untill a few service packs. :)

Nope Dx10 will not work in XP, only Vista.

During the beta I've seen more than a few bad upgrades. Clean install is the best way to go to get rid of all the crap and yes you have to have Vista if you want to use DirectX 10.

I agree with waht's been said already - clean install is definitely best. It is your operating system, after all; you don't want to be leaving any junk behind.

I just thought of something I'd never thought of before, If I buy an upgrade version of vista, to use with my retail version of XP Pro, am I allowed to keep XP Pro installed?

upgrade = yes is possible,

format = recommended ;) best to start afresh with a new os. clean drivers clean install, and see how it runs.

yup

upgrade installs usually run into problems down the line, its not that hard to make a backup of your files and reinstall a few programs
