So I'm abit of a noobie to networking but we've just signed up to Sky Fibre Max from a rather bad broadband internet setup. We will be supplied with a new router but to really maximise UL/DL speeds will a better router offer much in the ways of improvement or consistency in a quality connection?

If so are there any routers recommended? We live in a 4 bed detached new build home so it's majority plasterboard walls all over the place, I just want to be able to have decent and consistent internet and after advice on how I can get the best.

Thanks in advance.

Generally the actual sync speed will vary slightly from one chipset to another, but usually not massively on FTTC, though exceptions exist. The SkyQ router you will be supplied with has a reputation for less than amazing wifi performance, if its a problem for you, then consider a decent AP mounted centrally and use that.

It can vary a lot, if your on a eci cabinet a router with the latest Lantiq chipset could gain you upto 5mb, likewise a router with a Broadcom chipset can do the same on a huawei cabinet, you can lose the same or more if you missmatch chipsets.

I think the main gain from using different routers is when it comes to wifi speed and coverage.

Usually the modem routers we get from the ISP are bog standard and lacking in plenty of features. If you use a lot of wifi devices and would like them to be have better coverage and access to potentially more speed then yes, buying your own modem/router would be a good investment, as long as its compatible to the service you have.
