Will a PCI express work in a PCI slot?

No, PCI-E is entirely separate to PCI so you can't mix it up. You could try to find a PCI graphics card although they aren't hugely common nowadays. What do you want the graphics card for? Is it for a second monitor or primary? If primary then a new AGP card is probably your best bet.

It'd be much easier to find a cheap PCI graphics card than one which would fit into an AGP 1x slot.

Iirc, AGP 1x/2x were of the 1.5v variation and the later 4x/8x were of 3.3v (I could be slightly wrong) and getting a 1.5v AGP card may be tricky unless you get one from auction.

I wasn't quite sure if it was meant to be one AGP slot or an AGP slot 1x so I checked the Gigabyte website and it is a socket 478 motherboard with an AGP 4x slot.

You are correct about the AGP variations with one minor point, some AGP 2x were dual voltage so would work on either 1.5v or 3.3v. :)

Hmmm, it being quantity rather than type does make more sense :p

Seeing as this is the case, an AGP card would be much more sensible.
