Will a QX9650 be able to handle COD Black Ops

I need some help and advice on upgrading my processor to something that can handle COD Black ops. I am currentky using an E6750 2.66 OC'd to 3.5 and up until now has handled everything perfectly. However black ops online is almost unplayable for all the juddering and suttering, even though my frame rate never drops below 60ish. When I check the processor it has been running maxed out even with all the settings turned to low, in fact the graphics settings have little effect on improving things.

So my dilema is upgrade to the best 775 socket chip i can, while I can, so a QX9650, if this is capable of the job. Or rebuild the whole system to i5/i7. Is anyone in the forum using this processor with any joy. I would rather go down the QX9650 route as it is cheaper and quicker.

The rest of my system is:

4gb ocz DDR3
GTX280
750watt PSU

Thanks for any help

Strange, I play Black Ops on a Q6600 and it runs super smooth, it was stuttering when the game was first released but its spot on now.

So yes a Q6600 will work great if you want to overclock, I actually downloaded a different config file from off the internet which helped my stuttering.

Yeah pretty much any S775 quadcore should pack more umpf than an E6750, especially as black ops can utilise 4 threads.

thanks guys for the quick replies, I think i will look into a used quad core. Hopefully that will solve the problem. In reply to iTek, steam did download an update but i haven't found anything on the net that updates the config file, were you refering to the steam update or am i missing something important?

thanks again

I actually downloaded a config file from a forum, I have looked and cant seem to find it, it did help. Try searching for it here, basically it lowered all the settings but then you changed them and it worked great, strange since it initially stuttered on the lowest settings anyway.

Black ops is a bit of a problem game for a lot of people, with the spec in sig it's still very jerky/stuttery for me. Doesnt make a difference even running it on low, fps are always high, but gpu usage is very low, (40% ono).

i went from the same CPU as you (e6750 @ 3.6Ghz) to a Q9550 (3.8Ghz) recently. massive difference to Black Ops. Zero stutter now and is silky smooth.
well recommended to go Quad if you not looking to upgrade all you parts.

COD: BO is not a good reason to upgrade. The stuttering is felt on faster computers than yours. However you will probably find that upgrading your CPU will help with other games though and may help with Black Ops if you are lucky.

Don't spend on a QX9650 though, waste of money tbh, go for a Q6600 or Q6700. Or if you can find one at a good price a Q9450, Q9550 or Q9650, though the laters three may have issues with your current motherboard, depending on what the chipset is.

thanks for all your comments, in reply to a few:

The PSU is a thermaltake toughpower 750W

The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R with the P35 chipset, will this cause problems with a Q9550 (i'm bidding on one now on fleabay!)

strange is that, as it works fabulously for me...
and as you can see, i have similar spec.

A Qx9650 has plenty of life in it, to be honest.

My set up, although Im itching to upgrade the cpu/mobo/ram, I could honestly carry on playing games at a high IQ for the next two years easily.

The era of games widely needing anything beyond 4 cores is not here yet!
