Will a refurbished Alternator Last?

Hi, hope everyone is well.

Long story short, my Mercedes had an alternator failure on the motorway that took out the battery with it. The battery has been replaced via euro car parts, the alternator is proving more troublesome.

Euro Car Parts / Auto Doc do not have an OEM equivalent alternator (Euro Car Parts had one listed, but it was to low in amperage and did not charge the battery and was returned), Ebay only has old ones off cars that are 5 or 6 years old so probably near EOL anyway. Mercedes want £900, and it is on back order, non available in stock. The car has already been sat 4 weeks waiting for parts.

I can get my alternator refurbed for £50, is this worth doing, and will it last? The breakdown on the motorway was pretty bad, don't want a repeat of that.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

We send a few alternators/starters to a local company to refurb and have had zero comebacks.
They refurbed a alternator for an old car of mine and it was going strong when I sold it.

Providing some numpty hasn’t had the belts over tensioned and damaged the bearing behind the drive pulley, it’s usually only the brushes wearing out or the diode/rectifier pack that fails.

My late father used to refurb dynamos, alternators and stater motors for a living. He guaranteed for 12 months and only ever had returns where the purchaser had messed up the installation.

A refurb from a decent shop should last you years.

Exactly

Refurbed and usually with better parts.

For 50 quid surely it’s worth a go, order a OEM one and when it comes replace this one if you don’t trust it but at least you get your car back on the road again in the mean time.
