Will a router slow my downloading?

Just installed a DI-524 router, and i have noticed my download speeds have slowed down quite a bit, is this due to the holiday period, ie, more people at home on the web or is my router setup incorrectly?

Just did a speed test, ==300kb/s, i'm getting ==25kb/s

Before adding the router, had no problem reaching 100kb/s but nowhere near 300.

Could it be norton internet security? My D-link ethernet modem or router?

(No other computers on the network, router for wireless purposes)

Where are you downloading from?

It's unlikely to be the router, and if Norton was causing a problem, it would have been one without the router connected.

Try downloading a torrent like open office. Also make sure you open up your ports that will do the trick :).

torrents NEED the router setup correctly. but regardless of that, torrents are an awful way of comparing download speeds because you cant guarantee the quality and speed of the files your downloading. if you want to compare speeds, do it from a dedicated server.

If the ports weren't open, then nothing would download from the program at all right?

How can it be setup "correctly"? What sort of things need to be set? Currently my internet connection works fine, just downloading speeds are slower than expected.

you'd think that yes. i have no end of problems with torrents and port settings. so much so that i just dont bother. besides, as download speed is somewhat tied to upload, im stuffed on my ntl connection anyway. the upload speeds are rubbish. i cant help you more specifically than that im affraid.

Actually uTorrent will download if the ports are closed, it just doesn't allow the max speed which might be what you're experiencing.

There is an indicator at the bottom right of the program that tells you if your router is port throttling, either that or uTorrent has a speed test which detects if the port is closed.

Find that out and you'll have a better idea of whats going on, i opened the port and download speeds tripled.

Go here http://portforward.com/routers.htm and have a look at how its done on your router model.

Also for peace of mind change the default port that you open, as a lot of trojans/viruses are set up to scan for open ports used as the default in P2P programs.

Edit* Also bear in mind that the download speed of torrents are mainly determined by the speed of the person you're downloading from, less so from the speed of your connection.

The indicator at the bottom is always green! It was red a few days ago, but then went green again after a restart, potential conflict?

My router will only allow 15 port settings, and to do as portforward asks i need to add 10 approx, and there isn't enough space to add them all. But the ones there currently, are not enabled, and are either defaulty added by the router itself or posibly by another progam on my computer(?), so can i just delete them or are they important?

Also, change from default ports, does it matter what i change them to?

Adding 10 ports doesn't sound right, uTorrent only uses one port for incomming connections, this is the article for your model router...

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-524/Utorrent.htm

If you mean you need to add a range of IP's then it should allow you to add 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.20 for example.

You can change the port to anything valid, if you go into the uTorrent network settings as shown in the link and click "random port" it'll generate a non standard one, its not essential but advisable for security.

Edit* Oh and i've found the uTorrent indicator to be a bit unreliable at times, it could be because you have a dynamic IP, it goes through all that in the article if its a problem.
