Old gaming pc is AMD phenom x4 955 processor with 8gb ram running 2 graphic cards but unsure what they are now.
I’m a family man now and pc has just been used for storage,iTunes and family photo and documents & what not for the last 7 years...
Trouble now it’s running ultra slow as Im still using the old style hardrives.
So a fresh format is needed that a friend will do
I’ve been told a ssd drive will speed my pc up and make it faster in general.
I Need recommendations on a 500gb ssd harddrive that will be compatible for this system and that can be used again when I actually get round of upgrading mobo, ram, cpu.
Unsure what hardrives I have in there now but can I get like a external case for them and still use them as and when I connect using usb as a external harddrive??

Firstly, Welcome.

Secondly, edit that post regarding the legality of your OS.

Lastly, whats your budget? One option is to remove the hard drives to an external ensclosure for media backup and replace them with an SSD in the PC.

I agree I would like to remove both my hard drives to a external enclosure for media back up and replace them with a SSD drive 500gb ideally in the pc with a budget of £80 or under ideally for the SSD hard drive.
What kind of external enclosure do I need for me old hard drives as I like the idea of using them as media back up.
Btw original post has been altered thank you

I've had SSDs in older hardware than that (but still with some form of SATA ports) and whilst they have not been able to work to their full potential they have definitely improved performance and allowed the system to be usable for longer.

In fact a small 250GB SSD for the OS drive and keep the existing data drives "as is" is often a cheaper, but still very usable, option.

Yes 250gb would be cheaper, I’m looking at the Samsung evo 860 2.5 internal ssd would be ideal being 250gb and as my OS drive, I am unsure if 860 evo has sata ports?

Why are you making the mechanical drives external? Im all SSD but one now (5tb) but I used to keep them internal for different duties including backup / archive. If you don’t need them to be portable, don’t waste the money on an enclosure.

If I were using old drives externally, I’d be putting them in a NAS as an extra layer against Ransomware (write access given only to your backup software)

Are the sata ports SataII (3Gbps)? If so an SSD will still do well, and will be even better later on.

PS. Make sure you have a robust backup scheme.

Don’t understand this question. Any data drive has Sata ports, it’s m.2 drives that don’t.

Personally I would save some spondoolies and go for something like an older Crucial MX drive; you won’t be leveraging any of the advantages of a Samsung drive anyways.

I’m sorry guys I am not a pc teck minded person and been out the loop for 7 years now and I’m a noob.
After reading the replies I’ve gotten from this thread of mine I’ve kinda figured out right or wrongly what I can do.
1 purchase crucial MX500 gb internal SSD drive and install as my main drive with a fresh OS installed on it.
2 use old main drive as a secondary slave drive and delete old OS and use solely for back up.
Yes 500gb as main drive maybe a little big but for the money it will cost I don’t mind.
Yes running a SSD I will not get the full benifit of how fast they run but if I’m
Going to buy another hard drive I may as well get a SSD .
Agree there no point in spending money for external cages for the spare drives I do have I may as well leave them in my pc case .

Do me a favour, before you buy anything, tell me what Mobo you have. I want to check the connections and spec for you.

I was thinking more the older mx300 drives, I’m still running one, they’re excellent imo. But whatever floats your boat, the I have an MX500 too and it’s spot on. My games drive is a 1tb NVME WD Black, and whilst it’s insanely fast, I don’t notice any real difference for loading times etc.

My way of thinking is upgrade the board cpu and ram in a years time and the ssd will be good in a more modern mother board and really not money wasted

Mother board is Asus M4A78-E
Cpu is AMD Phenom x4 955 processor
8g ram.
Will that SSD drive work?

Your Mobo supports Sata 3gb/s, so the SSD will be fine, just slower than a 6gb/s connection.

Yep, seems a-ok to me. Getting a larger capacity (500gb) is also a good idea, because when you get a new machine, you could get a small capacity nvme drive for your boot, and use the 500gb drive for games.
