Intel Core2Duo E6420 reach 3GHz with ease or not at all or what ? It's been a while since I've been in the overclocking game.

What cooler is favoured ? Budget of £20inc for the cooler ?

How advantageous is it to have 4-4-4 rather than 5-5-5 ?

That chip should get to 3GHz quite easily, what motherboard do you have though, and RAM?

For £20 I would get an Arctic cooling freezer. The big coolers are in the £30's if you can stretch I would invest in one of those instead.

Arctif Freezer 7 pro is a brilliant cooler for the price, got mine for £10 inc! Best tenner i ever spent.

Got my cpu to 3ghz with ease, idle at 45c with the fan at low speed :)

I had the Arctic 7 in mind. Thats the one it'll be if anything.

It's all rather up in the air, I think it's a matter of treating myself after the exams so I can turn this computer into a fileserver/cruncher.

Also, 5-5-5 and 4-4-4 is there that much in it ?

Cheers guys.

I was thinking the S3, Are the £30 coolers worth it ?
They are much better build quality, and will give you better performance than the cheaper coolers. If you go for the Noctua one you can get a decent S12 fan too, its hardly audible. I have my E6600 running at 3.5GHz idling at 36C and fully loaded at 47C using a Noctua NH-U12F

with memory timings try get them as tight as possible without getting any errors, DDR2 can start from 3-3-3-9 to about 6-6-6-18, if you are overclocking you can take up the timings to get memory to clock more altho the speed difference from slacker timings isnt much

Going from DDR2-533 with slack timings 6-6-6-18 to a set of performance RAM doing 1066 @ 4-4-4-12 I saw slightly less than 10% overall performance difference... in the end I settled for the G.Skills in my sig doing 800MHz 4-4-4-12 w/ 1T... playing atm to see how far I can push the frequency and still hold 1T tho you don't need any higher than 800MHz RAM unless your running a 4gig conroe or something...
